Modeling general discussion

Getting started.

Brand new guy here.  I want to start to get involved in this hobby.  Tons of questions, but for now just one simple question:  What gauge is recommended to keep costs at a minimum?  I have plenty of room for a layout.

My wife's Christmas Model Railroad Tray

Recently, my wife bought a serving tray ready for Christmas. I didn't realise that she was a Model Railroad fan!

Merry Christmas

Things are ramping up. Aside from Easter, Christmas is the busiest time of year for a pastor. I wanted to take a minute out to wish all here the very Merriest of Christmases. May the peace and love of Christ find you happy and healthy. For those who may not be of the Christian faith, I wish you a greeting that you find meaningful at this time of year. The most important thing is to remember to love one another.

Another filtering suggestion.

Rick (rtw3d) had made a suggestion about filtering and being able to filter out certain users or subjects.
It reminded me of something that I've often wished was possible.  Who knows, maybe it is.  I'll use myself as an example:

Expert Sound Advice Wanted

Hey, everybody! I recently hooked up a SoundCar decoder to an external speaker and it sounds amazing. I'm going the do the same with a diesel decoder although I haven't purchased one yet. I'm kind of waiting for the TCS WOW Diesel before making a decision between Tsunami, TCS, or Lok. It'll be for a EMD 645 non turbo. I remember reading a work around for coasting with a Tsunami but I'm hoping newer decoders can eliminate extra programming.

Video Editing Software Question

I'm about to dip a toe into the world of model railroad video making and would appreciate any recommendations for a straightforward free video editor program.

I downloaded Lightworks on to my laptop for a 'look see', but when returning a couple of weeks later to install on my main machine for a first serious go, I hit multiple issues.
I ended up drowning in a sea of problems; license reactivation, password error, email confusion, token error confusion, machine license confusion and to be honest, rapidly lost the will to live.

Modeling the Union Pacific Portland Rose 1968 Train #17/18 Pike Size Passenger Train

First let me state that I am not Union Pacific modeler,  I model the Spokane Portland & Seattle 5th subdivision in 1968 which crossed the UP mainline at the Celilo Bridge and connects at OT Junction. I am a long way off from modeling this area, but in doing some research about the area I came across an image of the Portland Rose cruising along the south bank of the Columbia River. What peaked my interest was the fact the train was a very short prototype train that would be great sa a Pike Size passenger train.

It would be great if we could use filters on this site!

It would be wonderful if we could set up and use filters on this site - much like filters on MS Outlook.  Say that I found poster "rtw3rd" a bore, or chronic complainer and didn't want to read ANY of his posts, or let's say I got sick and tired of hearing about "Richlawn Railroad" or "Hoovertown".  I would LOVE that I could have filters automatically suppress my filtered items where they didn't even show!
