Modeling general discussion

A really random thought...

A thought after seeing a few layouts at a train show today (regrettably not the Springfield show):

Model Railroading is Pun.

Weekly Photo Fun - January 23rd to January 29th

Its time to start the Weekly Photo Thread. So post 'em if you got 'em.:)

As always, we get as much out of your in-process photos as we do the highly polished "all done" shots!

Spam

I just spamed someone with Nike info apparently in Norwegian or similar language and was going to record the posters id but I forgot to. Sorry about that.

Micro connectors

I am looking for a source of micro connectors pins that will allow me to make my own connectors like the ones that Trains Control System sells.

I am installing decoders in my brass steam locos and these connectors are handy to connect the engine to the tender and connect wires inside the locomotive.

Newest Module for our On30 Modular group

Working on a 30" x 96" On30 Module / stand alone layout for fun.

Saw a great 2' x 6' On30 layout at a train show late last year and it got me going on doing one for myself.

It has been sitting for a month or so, but I decided to get moving on it and see if I could get it presentable prior to a show in late Febuary.

So here is a short video of it's current state,  don't mind the stalls at the frogs, they are not powered yet.

Cost for bringing a quality loco/rolling stock to market

i was having a discussion with a friend the other day about the current state of hobby manufacturing and how additive manufacturing (3D printing) and rapid prototyping will affect the hobby. Obviously 3d printing may radically change how products are made for certain small markets such as ours.  Current state of the art 3D printing can rival detail and finish of injection molding (Shapeways is NOT state of the art) but are so far too expensive for the average consumer to acquire and are too slow to economically mass produce products.

So my questions are

It all Started

It all started when grandma sent the kids a Life Like HO train set. Of course I was already infected by my grandfather when he bought me a Lionel train set. It ran under the Christmas Tree. ( how did that tradition get started?)  So my wife said "why don't you set up something up for the kids in the basement?" Well it all went downhill from there!

But it was all for the kids !!!

Navigating the ARS Hobby Show

Having been to the show in the past, I know it's big and easy to lose track of where you are and where you want to be.  Fortunately, the Society has kindly posted PDF files of the floor plan and list of vendors (with locations).  The files can be downloaded from here: http://www.railroadhobbyshow.com/pdf.php

Thanks to you, it is coming together

Thank you for all the great information and alternative ideas so far.  The layout is coming together.  Designed from the start for digital control, it uses the traditional flex track and cork roadbed.  The installation was greatly simplified by all the info gathered here.

Discussion is less costly than paper which is much less costly than laying track and ripping it out.
