Modeling general discussion

Underpass, LA, 1976. An ATSF served yard situated under a highway overpass.

Hello everybody from cold old England.

It has been a number of years since I've been on here, caused by a number of different things, but I'm back with a new layout.

Still a work in progress, with many details still to go. I hope you all enjoy it and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Staging Yard as an A/D Yard

Hi all,

A hopefully fun discussion question for us:

Rather than bare plywood staging, what do you all think about scenicking staging yards and treating them as the edge of an imagined-but-mostly-unmodeled marshalling yard (an "A/D yard", if you will)?

Some pros of the approach:

- No loss of illusion, compared to running into bare-benchwork staging at the end of the run (does this matter?)

If you could only have one Model Railroading book in your library.

Please state "what" and "why".

I will start. My one and only book would have to be "Building City Scenery for your model railroad" by John Pryke. This is my all time favorite bathroom book. In fact my current oversized door layout is modeled after a city scene detailed in the book. The amount of helpful material packed into the 96 pages is second to none in my estimation and I learn something new each time I open it up.

Details West

Is DetailsWest still in operation?  I received a couple of kits from a vendor that had missing parts.  I have sent 2 emails to DW with no response.  Anybody have any news?

Older hazardous material decals

Hi Ladies and Gents,

I'm looking for someone who can make some decals or has the old sheet(s) with the old style labelling for inflammables, acids, explosives etc.. The old labels were introduced before the U.N placards. They were orange in color and black number inside of the orange rectangular label.

My H.O. layout is based on the transition period and I've looked on line for the information to have the decals made.

Last weekend in Raleigh, NC - Lots of short videos to share

Good evening all,Last weekend, I was able to bring modules to set up with the Sipping and Switching Society of North Carolina in Raleigh, NC. Following the state established safety protocols, a large ( 132' x 142' ) layout was unloaded, assembled, and declared operational in 6 hours. (edit - move large graphic to new post)

Respectfully,

Tim Moran Akron, OH

A Modest Model Railroad Wish

Iowa Scaled's Proto Throttle is great and all for diesels, and I'm sure that a similar item would be wonderful for steam locos.  But while they might give me the "feel" of running a locomotive, they don't help me run my train any better.

For example, if a bridge has a 10 MPH slow order, what does that mean?  "Slow"?  Not really, for a shay that isn't a bad speed.  Speed step 3?  Maybe.  But probably not.  Who knows?  And while some might say "who cares?", rest assured it bugs some of us.

Homasote spline and 3 way light switch switch machines

I'm interested in using 3 way light switches for switch machines with 2" homasote spline roadbed and would appreciate any information that anyone who has done this or seen it could provide.

Thanks
