Modeling general discussion

Rail and Air technology fusion
I have enjoyed the recent excellent videos that have been posted on the forum, which got me wondering...... about technology fusion.

Getting to know your fleet
This comes from a discussion I was having earlier today. I can already see that I am going to have a problem when I start operating my layout. Since I've built, modified, or painted pretty much every piece of rolling stock I own, I know each and every car "personally." That means that I won't be able to see just a string of box cars - I'll see the rebuilt reefer, the Walthers car, the Roundhouse metal car, etc. I know because that's how I see them now, as I play around on the layout. I wonder how that will work out for me during an

New surprise coming with the Feb MRH
There's a new surprise coming in the February issue of MRH that we've been planning for a while ... it's an all new addition to the magazine!
We think you'll like it ...
New to Model Railroading
I am relatively new to Model Railroading and want to start building a small layout to begin with.
I am having dIfficulty in deciding what to model as I have just settled in North America (originally from Uk).
I would prefer a shelf layout or a 4ft x 8ft table as space is a premium; preferably of an industry which would have interesting operations and keep my 5yr old son and myself interested for long periods of time.
Would anyone be kind enough to throw in some suggestions of layouts designs/ plans together with costs to build.
My chosen scale is HO and I would like to able to control op
Realistic Slot Car Animation
Just wondering if anyone out there ever experimented with "REALISTICALLY" incorporating slot cars to their HO scale layout? I like the Faller Car system but can't stomach the costs involved, and I have not been able to come up with any realistically viable alternatives. Obviously the trade off with slot cars is the slot and wires imbedded into the roadway, but I've almost convinced myself that I could deal with that if it meant being able to add some otherwise life-like animation to my roadways.

Working bells animations and SMD lighting
G'Day,
here is a link to my YouTube video showing 3 x Blackstone C-19 locos each with animations and lighting using SMD LEDs -

2 x locos have working bells and the 3rd loco has a fireman shoveling coal.
All 3 have a 2nd decoder and tiny mocro motors driving the animations.

Steam vs. diesel models - a paradigm shift?
I have heard it said many times that one of the things diesels have going for them is that the same model can serve a wide variety of railroads, whereas each road had its own steam locomotive designs. That explains why there are more GP38's and GP40's than there are Southern Ps-2's or N&W M2's.
Going to NS country
Just got my first assignment for my new job. Looks like I will be spending 2-3 weeks in Kenova WV. I'll definitely take the opportunity to check out the local railroading. Looks like there is both CSX and NS track in the town and some of the trackage on Map Quest looks very interesting.

How to make the transition from paper to paperless
I was wondering how the "Big Guys" were going to make the transition from paper to paperless (eZine) and I just got an email that for an additional $$ I can add the on-line version to the paper version. What do you bet that in the "near future" once the eZine catches on that they will discontinue the paper version?
