Modeling general discussion
Great Weathering Article
I really enjoyed Tom Klimoski's weathering article in the March issue. He did a great job of explaining how he built things up in layers starting with the wash, oils next, and finishing it off with chalk. The photos really snapped of my screen.

"You're a better modeler than I'll ever be"
That's what a good friend and fellow modeler said to me recently. Now, I appreciate the compliment, but I have to take issue with the statement. For one thing, he's a perfectly good modeler in his own right, and more than once I've called and asked for his help or advice.

Out with the old....
Hi all,
for some time now I have been thinking going NCE for the Willamette Valley Sub. and this morning the postman delivered...
So, until this morning I was using a Bachmann Dynamis DCC controller, and the layout looked like this when standing in front of it...
Poof! Its gone again.
I am beginning to suspect that there is a special demon of model railroading similar to the sock monster.
For those of you unfamiliar with the sock monster, it is the beast that eats random socks when you are doing your laundry so that you often end up with a mismatched pair.
In railroading, I swear there is a monster that eats NMRA track gauges. I must have bought at least six of these gauges over the last couple of years, and yet, I can't find any of them!

A reason for Freelancing
Here's another reason freelancing a model railroad.

Need I say more. I was going to get a couple of more NYC flexiflo hopper kits for a planned cement transfer station. I have one but would like to have another 5 at least. Now it looks like I'll only have one. I don't want to go through the hassle of getting them off E-bay or hoping I can get a few more with what ever stock he has left.
I just saw this on another model railroad forum that I frequent.

If you read the thread, this is being done in O-scale and the customer also wants them to build Yankee Stadium, the Polo Grounds, and the Empire State Building to scale! The empire State Building is 23 feet tall in O-scale! I don't know what sort of gymnasium this guy has for a railroad room, but it must be awesome!

Working doors?
Over the years, I have been amused and confused by models with working doors, louvers, hatches, etc. The early Proto 2000 FA and E-units come to mind, along with a slew of reefers and nearly every old box car in the history of HO scale. What gets me is that there does not seem to be any real benefit to making them open or move, and the compromise is an obviously out of scale hinge, track, etc. Who remembers the radiator grilles on the P2K FA? They never looked right, unless you glued them down. Ever try to replace a door on an early run E8?

How many steam modelers out there?
I'm just curious, how many die-hard steam modelers are there on the MRH forum?
To me, there are three kinds of steam modelers:
