Cork Roadbed

Anyone else having problems getting cork roadbed?

It appears that there is some kind of conspiracy afoot to keep us model railroaders "jonesing" for cork roadbed. Even Midwest lists it on their website as being "Out of Stock Until Further Notice"!

I don't know who is behind this, but it has to be someone pretty high up in the food chain! Possibly the CFR or the Bildebergers, or maybe even the Bohemian Grove group. They may be working with the extra-terrestrials who are based in Area 51!

The Truth is out there!

How did you choose the prototype railroad that you model

As I am reading a lot of post, I began to wonder what influenced a modeler to choose the railroad prototype that they model. I live on the West coast, my interest seem to focus on Western railroads. When I lived in Colorado, I became interested in the history of the narrow gauge railroads that ran during the late 1800s up through the 1950s and 60s, so my modeling focuses on Colorado narrow gauge. However I have noticed that a majority of the prototype railroads mentioned on the MRH forum are upper Midwest and East coast railroads.

A modeler's view of the world

Sometimes I think I see things differently than the average person.  It's related to the way that I build and paint my models.  When I look at something, I see the basic shape.  I'm sort of mentally disassembling it, breaking it into it's component parts and shapes.  I even see giant brass and styrene parts coming together to make the object.

I have noticed that most man-made things break down into simple shapes pretty well.  Locomotives are boxes or tubes, etc.  Natural things, not so much.

Looking for Info

I'm looking for information on the former Marietta Air Force Station, Marietta PA. I've googled my little fingers off and haven't been able to find anything useful - from a model railroad perspective, at least.

Thinking Medford in May - query

The PNR/PCR convention is coming up May 2-5 in Medford OR, and I've given some thought to attending, mainly because a good part of the trip can be done via Amtrak.  It turns out the Coast Starlight reaches Klamath Falls at 2150, so I'm wondering what there is in the way of bus service to Medford at that time of night.

Anyone out there who can pass on some local knowledge?

Thanks

Por-A-Mold vs DOW RTV Rubber

Has anyone used Por-A-Mold Rubber material for making molds for plaster and alumilite casting?! I have used the DOW RTV product very successfully.  But the material is very expensive.  I have seen in a video, someone using "Por-A-Mold" by synair which according to them is 1/5 the cost.   I was wondering if anyone has used this product and how well it duplicates details.

Thanks.

Why Cork Trackbed?

Why the fascination with Appalachian railroads?

Trying to decide on a theme for my new HO layout and I've chosen a track plan. The trackplan is a Byron Henderson design that is in turn based off the MR "Virginian" project layout. While trying to decide on a theme, I tired to convince myself that maybe just doing an Appalachian coal hauler theme would be interesting. I didn't have much luck....Coal haulers are interesting enough I guess but what is the fascination with Appalachian railroads, especially  with contributors to MR?

Wind turbine base loads

I'm working on 4 of the 89' flat cars, with a wind turbine base loads. I just completed the first car. I have 3 more to go.

And here's the prototype. They only have chains on one end.

Using Real Dirt as Ballast

Jack suggested I start a new thread on this topic.

Here is a quick run down of the techniques I used with real dirt to create the look in the bottom photo.
