Modeling general discussion

Other than more room, what is your railroad desire?

In other words, what is your layout or workshop missing? This can be something no longer available, something that was never available, or is beyond the budget. I leave out more room, because that is universal.

My desire is for more geared steam. I have a Roundhouse Shay, both Bachman climaxes and a Riverossi Heisler. Brass is out of my price range, as well as anything currently on eBay

Bethlehem Steel coal stacker

I came across this interesting picture of a coal/coke stacker. The picture is posted on Facebook in the Steel Mill Groups. I found it interesting. This could be built as a diorama display. My interest in it would be to animate it with a connected rotary dumper. The dumper would dump coal/coke onto the lower conveyor and then the stacker would pile it up in a long line pile. The question is, how does the coal/coke get onto the incline conveyor from the bottom conveyor that runs along underneath. The mechanism is to the right just out of the picture.

Glue for a metal model

I am assembling an old metal kit of a Publicker Chemicals tank car. The kit suggests using Ambroid glue by applying a thin coat, letting it dry, add more glue and position the parts. I am not familiar with Ambroid glue. It sounds like a type of contact cement. Is it still available? Would CA be better?

The parts fit together pretty well but there are slight gaps. Would a medium or thick CA be better than the thin CA? Are medium or thick CA as strong as the thin stuff?

ProtoThrottle Update

Just a quick update on the ProtoThrottle...  A few weeks back, it went through Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing at NCEE Labs in Lincoln, NE.

It passed!

Here are some photos from the testing:

Long linear runs

I was just read Lance Mindheim's article "Pick the right layout shape for you" in MRR. In the article Lance stresses the importance of long linear (straight) runs of track, especially when one wants to incorporate staging and yards. I think he over stresses the need for long linear runs. Now I can see long linear runs if you are modeling the plains, maybe the Midwest, and some coastal regions, but coming from western PA, I grew up with mountain railroading. I'd be willing to bet that on the lines I grew up near a mile of straight track was an anomaly.

What is your most prized railroad posession? All RR aspects are welcome.

Something you kit-bashed?

Locomotive (s)?

Rolling stock?

Purchased building (no modifications, as intended)?

Tools that you have found other uses for?

Software programs?

Something you repurposed for your RR?

I'm Hooked!

I've held of getting a sound equipped locomotive almost as long as I resisted the move from DC to DCC. I'd seen and listened to locomotives with sound on various videos and at numerous train shows. I wasn't that impressed. Out of necessity the units didn't produce that low bass typical of the prototype and all too often, the sound of the horns and the bell seemed to blend into the engine sound. It all seemed too "toy" like to me.

Best hobby shops in London or Paris?

At the end of this summer, my wife and I will be going across the pond (I know you should never mention stuff ahead of time, but I didn't mention the dates and a good friend of mine from Special Forces will be house sitting for us). I might have some time to go looking in Paris and probably some in London, and I am wondering if anyone in the UK/EU can tell me if there are any spectacular "you can't miss this" hobby shops in either city.
