Modeling general discussion

Copper Smelting in Southeastern Arizona circa 1916

I am planning a model railroad to represent the operations of the El Paso & Southwestern System as it provided service to the smelters (as well as supplies to the Calvary camp) in Douglas, Arizona around the year 1916.

This Sanborn map from 1929 shows the overall layout and track plan for the smelter I would like to represent on my railroad.

G&W paint Scheme

With Scaletrains recent  announcement of SD40 units, I am wondering and I also asked them why no G&W paint scheme...even if its just the paint and no decals.  Is there or still is licencing issues with using that?  I know Intermountain trains had some issues previously, but have not heard anything since, and was just wondering.

Chooch rubber rock weathering

I recently purchased a few of the Chooch rubber rock castings. These are pretty cool, I can see where they may have a place on my railroad but they need some work. I started by spraying them with gray primer and then using pan pastels tried different colors. In the photo you can see the different colors and degrees of weathering. These are only a test. The original out of the package is at the top. I will wash them off with soap and water and start with the original when I decide which color I will use.

Who builds Resin Kits?

Who builds resin kits? I have long thought that only ultra serious prototype modelers build resin kits. While I am a prototype modeler I am not what I would refer to as ultra serious and as such I do not build resin rolling stock kits. The problem is that I see the availability of injection molded plastic kits slowly drying up with only expensive RTR models available. While were are not there yet, IMO we are well along the road heading in that direction.

What camera setup do you use to document a desktop project?

What camera setup do you use to document a desktop project build?  For example, creating the wall of a building flat on the desk.  For this discussion, a camera can include a smartphone.

I would like to shoot straight down at the object on the desk, and if at an angle, I would like a background of one color without seams.

ink not transfers

well in working with a project of changing unit numbers.

i have a couple covered hoppers one needs new numbers,  but they are ink not transfers. not run across this before. any info on removing them without damage?

micro sol only took off a very small amount of the ink and now numbers are still great but a blue fog like smear around them.

if not then just maybe cover with graffiti?

not a top of the line car. but it is a good one, detail about on par with most other plastic rolling stock. ahm brand made in taiwn.

Operating aids

Let's post some aids to getting a beginner started in operations.

Here is an example of a flyer sent to people interested in an operating session on a railroad that has been running sessions for about nine years.

Hornby goes Steampunk

Hornby has announced a new Steampunk inspired range of locos, rolling stock and buildings that will be marketed under its legacy brand name Bassett Lowke.

Train automation

If one wanted to have automated trains running, let's assume main line or passing sidings only, with no switching etc, what is the state of the art? This might be, for example, for a museum or display layout, although I could easily imagine other applications. If one had a long point-to-point, single track railroad with passing sidings, could a computer arrange for a westbound to make its way across the road, safely meeting the eastbounds?

Railroading at Great Lakes Harbors

I was born about a mile from the harbor at Lorain, Ohio during the first half of the previous century! Think about that. As a youngster I remember the fog horns all night long as lake boats negotiated their way into and out of Lorain's harbor. Lake boat is sort of a misnomer since they were from 600-ft to 800-ft in length. More like a ship than a boat.
