Feb 2016-6 - More effective use of track gauges
Miles Hale returns to TrainMasters TV to host a new bonus series: "Back to the Workbench". He’ll bring you tips from his basement workshop as he builds his layout. This month: More effective use of track gauges.
Roundy, round and then some - adding a switching module.
So when you don't really have the room to dedicate to a permanent layout and are given a decent little roundy, round my a fellow forum member, how do you make it a little more enjoyable than seeing 6 car trains doing circles?
You build a #6 18/24 curved turnout so you can connect a switching "module".

Fast Tracks and Headties
The attached photo is a screen grab from one of the videos on their site.
After you've assembled one of the turnouts and you've determined what side the switch stand is going to be on, are you supposed to trim the ties on the other side? So, if the switch stand is going on the ties in the upper part of the photo, would I trim the ties on the bottom where the red line is, flush with the adjoining ties?
Thanks,
Charles

Fitting a Keep Alive into a Locomotive
Hello all, I've done some looking and some emailing, but I haven't gotten a good answer on whether or not I'd be able to fit a Soundtraxx Current Keeper or a TCS KA2 in the body of my Athearn Genesis GP15-1 with a Tsunami decoder or my Athearn Genesis GP38-2 with a Tsunami decoder. I'm pretty sure I can fit the smaller TCS KA1 under there, but If possible, I'd prefer something larger with a bit more capacity seeing as how I tend to run my equipment at a crawl.

Where was the post that talked about a digital readout soldering pencil?
I can't find it anymore and wanted to order the one for ~$55.

OSCR moving forward
I initially started my blog about moving into a condo in Toronto and the restraints of real estate and building a proto/freelance railroad based on short lines running in Southern Ontario.
Now we are moving to Hamilton and I have a basement to extend my plans.

USA Train GP7, first run. To be repainted for Algoma Central and converted to battery/radio control. But we just wanted to see it run, on this snowy February day:

Touching Up a Painted Backdrop
I made a 20-minute-long video showing a technique for touching up a painted backdrop. This technique is a bit unique in that I use matte medium to blend progressively darker layers of color together on the backdrop itself. It can be a bit messy, but mistakes become your friend with this technique. I'm pretty pleased with the results!
