Layout Division & System Map...

For the last week and half I have been pretty much stagnant as far as layout time has been concerned as we are in the middle of our first term school break (2 weeks), and with this comes little to no time for the layout.

Frog height

I have been reading the posts about the various wheelsets using NMRA S-4.4 and RP25 and Proto:87.  I have also read Joe's building of a Central Valley turnout.

Please help with programming engine

I have a Kato n scale P42 with a drop-in TCS decoder (K0D8-A). I'm programming it using JMRI.

My goal is to get the ditch lights I just installed to stay on steady, or to pulse in an alternate fashion

I can get them to pulse, but I can't figure out how to also program them to stay on if that's what I want.

Here's my current setup:

Fleischmann Turnouts

I'm building a Noch preformed layout (Baden-Baden) using Fleischmann N scale piccolo track. The turnouts I have are not motorized. Any that had a motor I removed. They look clunky and you can't place ballast to hide them.

Bachmann HO scale Climax

Hi all,

I have the old version of the Bachmann Climax with the split gears. Does anyone know if the new version has better gears? I have the NWSL gears to put in my existing climax, but I'm having difficulty getting the mesh right using NWSL instructions.

cheers

Layout Design Idea and no not a late april fools joke LOL

For years I been planning that big awesome layout..but now I have come to that big moment i finished basement demo and basic remodel   I have final layout space available   and dreams n thoughts and planning dont fit.  So I now have a 16x13 ft space with a 9ft by 1ft extention on one 16 ft side.  Walls are only on the 25ft total wall side and adjacent 13ft wall (basement walls ).

Ballast experiments

There's no good conclusions or answers here, but if you'd like to see all the attempts I made in finding the 'right' ballast for my beat-up, run-down, never-had-funding-for-actual-ballast Rio Grande Southern trackwork, read on:

I hope to have a followup post with what I did decide to finally use.  Um, once I figure that out!

Fiber optics alternative for LED lighting

I brought this up in another thread so I thought I would share it here where it might be seen better. I use Stretch Magic (SM)as an alternative to fiber optics for my LED lighting. I found that the 1.5mm clear fits nicely into the light hole in my locomotives. I tested this in an old Athearn blue box (pictured). The technique I used was the same as if using fiber optics. (SM and LED connected with heat shrink tubing). I also tested it in a run of 5 inches. I could not see any difference in light output. The longest piece I use in my lighting is about 1 inch, so it was perfect.
