Start of the Lochdubh & Achnasheen Railway

Hello,

due to my housemove I had to size down my modelrailway. My new railway room is now about 13x10 feet in size, compared to about 13x13 feet in the old house. As mentioned earlier I sold two of my stations to friends. Here I started with the new benchwork for my new model railway layouts. I used Ikea Ivar cupboard system parts and plywood for the construction. Here a video update I made some time ago.

Revisting Navigational markers

Awhile back a fellow model railroader gave me a great idea for a way to show that my brancline terminus is a coastal one without using a lighthouse - install some navigation markers!

Loksound question - what is "Shift Mode"

Both the LokProgrammer and JMRI DecoerPro have a Shift mode option in the logical outputs section of the function mapping. The Loksound Select decoder manual merely mentions that Shift is a modifier.  The v4.0 decoder manual provides only slightly more detail.  An internet search only reveals a couple of postings on other forums where that question was never actually answered, and one possible use case in a compound/mallet steam engine.

Timesaver switching puzzle phone ap

John Allen's "Timesaver" requires switching know-how to move the cars efficiently within the track constraints.

The phone ap is a good learning opportunity.   Switching assignments increase in complexity as deliveries are completed.  Ten minutes can quickly elapse as an assignment progresses.   If a modeler has free time waiting for something, "Timesaver" is a nice option, otherwise it's a time waster !

Flip-A-Scene

So, I've been going through some old model railroad magazines, and I ran across something interesting. They called it "Flip-A-Scene", and it involved building two scenes, one on each side of a board, and then attaching it to a layout, or module on a pivot point, so that the scene can be flipped over, and change the scene to something different... either different location, or different era... now, this particular magazine is from 1988, and that many years ago and all, I'm kinda curious if anyone knows of anybody who has actually done this?

Plywood benchwork

Well, I'm building my layout in a new 14x16 building just for the layout and my shop. I decided a long time ago that this one would be built using 3/4" Birch plywood ripped into 3" boards. My experience finding quality 1x4's was not good on the last layout so reading about the plywood sounded like a good answer.

A dream of steam: City of New Orleans - a magic carpet made of steam, not steel

Let's get it right:  Arlo Guthrie and Willy Nelson changed the lyrics  -  or misheard them - but Steve Goodman wrote and sang it like this:
