Width of a main street

Hi everyone,

I'm building a main street in my town which will have 2 running lanes and 1 parking lane for a total of 29' in width or 4" in HO scale. (engineering background and fact checked).

My question is this, my intention is to build it to scale, but I was told to use compression to 3” – 3 ½” for the looks. What is right, 4” or compression? I know it’s my layout and I can do whatever pleases me, but is there a norm?

Abandonned Kennecot Mine in Alaska photo:

For those modeling mining scenes, I saw this photo on the "I Love Alaska" facebook site.  Sorry,  it wouldn't let me copy the picture, but could copy the link address.  It might be interesting and useful to some.

Using Model Railroad Techniques in Other Hobbies

I ended up using my weathering tool and techniques over the weekend but not for something very typical, I used it to make some props from a video game I play called Fallout while a very different thing it used the exact techniques as model railroading so what hobbies overlap for you guys?

Modeling from videos

I don't know how many modelers use youtube to get modeling info but the modern eras guys can learn a lot about trains from watching video. My fav is Stobe the hobo who sadly was killed about a year ago but left and interesting record of the trains and railroad towns in many parts of the country. Great views of rolling stock in operation and trackside scenery from the point of view of the trains. I wish the transition era riders had this modern video equipment so there would have been more stuff from that era....DaveB

Athearn GP-9 bodies on a Proto 2000 Gp-9 chassis

Since I know mechanically the Athearn BB and proto 2000 are similar, my question is can bodies of the Athearn BB GP-9 fit on the Proto 2000 GP-7/9 chassis?? I'm asking because I have a couple of detailed and custom painted BB GP-9 bodies on unpowered chassis...and a few brand new Proto 2000 GP-7 and 9s.

Yard adjacent to Staging vs Yard at a half-way point, and railroad direction?

I'd like to have discussion about the impact of positioning of my main yard in the overall diagram of traffic. I'll use my existing plan for a visual reference:

New Layout Room and a the beginnings of a small narrow gauge layout

Hello,

it's been a while since my last update. In the meantime I moved in to my new home. During the last week I spend some time in my new railway room in the basement and I also continued with the work on a small narrow gauge layout in my living quarter.

OLED Display with JMRI

Hello,
I'm running JMRI with DCC++ and two Ardunios. One for the Train Track and the other one for Sensors, turnouts and diverse outputs.
All is running very well and I control the Trains only on the Windows Machine, where JMRI is running on one Panel (see Link for Picture).
My question is: Is here a possibility to give some Messages from the Memories Table parallel to an extern Oled Display which can connected
from the Serial2 Interface from the Arduino Mega.
Maybe someone has realized it already and can give me some input.
Thanks in advance for any help.
