Modeling topic

December Update

Hello,

today I uploaded the December Update to Youtube. During the last few months not much happend to my modelrailroad projects. But last October some friends and I spend a weekend in Berlin to built about 20 curved modules to FREMO N-RE standards. After these I spend a few days in the Harz Mountain region and took a trip on the HSB (Harzer Schmalspurbahn) from Gernrode to Wernigerode and back.

simple but useful almost free oscilloscope

My son built the simple device shown below according to instructions he found on the following website:

Roof material ...

Is there a comprehensive overview somewhere of which box car types have roofs made of which material?

It would be very useful not to weather a model with rust while its prototype has a roof made of aluminum. laugh

The trouble with physics-why doesn't my festoon cable work?

If you are one of the handful of people that watched the video on my rotary dumper, you will remember that annoying bit of twisted wire going the trolley in the indexer that provided power to raise and lower the arm to move the train.  I've been trying to think of a way to make that part look better. The prototype uses a festoon cable system.  Basically, it's a track about 10' or so above the ground with little carriages on it and it supports the electrical cables that go to the trolley on the indexer.

wood shingle application

I've built several wood structure kits with simulated wood shingles. I've been using peel-off pre-stick-on shingles with some success, but with some difficulty. They tend to stick up/not adhere/not even...etc. Any ideas/tips as to how to apply these items with more success?

Wood Freight Dock Coloring

This is part of a freight dock from a Campbell kit. I went with the wood dock included in the kit instead of coming up with a more modern cement dock.

Started out with a color that I hoped would be similar to red seen on wood decks these days. That turned out to be a variation of orange. Added some basic brown dry brushed some flat black and then the same with a light grey.

3D Printing ADM - Update

Well printing and assembling the ADM elevator has been a time consuming process. So far I have created drawings for 175 individual objects which were all printed on a 3D printer. Although the elevator is not a faithful reproduction of the prototype it is close to it. I found that trying to reproduce all of the detail was near impossible.

Trying to build something this complex has been a real learning experience, I have found a lot of ways to not do something. If I were to do it again there are features of the model I would do differently.

Spline roadbed vs other methods

I have become enamored with the flowing look of track built on spline roadbed. While I model in On30, the track gauge is the same as HO, it does require longer ties and more center to center spacing. With that in mind I lowered a section of my bench work about 4” below where the other, plywood, roadbed is already in place to allow a few more riders and some room for scenery below the track level.

BLI HO Centipede Horn Sound, & a collection of Diesel Horn Sounds

A rather interesting discussion I ran across on another forum,..
http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/278654.aspx

Does anyone have any suggestion for better horn sound? These have the most cheesy horn sound I've ever heard from a modern DCC loco. Certainly the real Centipede horns did not sound like this. The horn sounds like 1950's Lionel.
