Where do I start?

After 40 years???, I am ready to start fresh in model railroading. I have spent considerable time on websites but I am finding myself more confused. Decisions made to go HO (N too small and O too big) and to go DCC. I like the idea of pre-made roadbed what what about any flex track? And, track is not compatible form company to company. Which is best? I'd rather get quality then buy problems. To make matters worse, I had no idea of Code 100, Code 83, etc and other than Atlas do not know what each company is offering.

manual uncoupling

Hello! This may be something someone may have already encountered. I have never used magnetic uncoupling ramps before. So, I bought a 2-pack. Placed them loosely on the track. Ran a Bachmann GP7 sound equipped loco over it and the loco grabbed the magnet and dragged it along. ?? I have never seen nor heard of this. What is the K.I.S.S.? If I glue the magnet down, will that slow the loco down when traveling over it? Or is there a better solution? The GP7 has the speaker in the fuel tank, right above the rails. Clinton, California gets an orange grove

Well, as Robbie Burns said "the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry". I still have not finished my Period Miniatures railroad depot kit because the roof came out really bad, did not even fit properly and I have had to build a new one from scratch. Shingles on that now finished and just painted under the eaves, still to install the roof assembly on the depot walls.

Odd gondola?

I've had this old S scale gondola laying around for a while and am thinking about painting and lettering it.  It's a 40 foot gon with solid bottom and pretty high sides. It has some strange looking large side ribs and large end corrugations but pretty scale sized ladders, steps, and grab irons. It looks like a cast car, some kind of shiny metal, perhaps aluminium. Probably from the early days of S scale. Anyway does anyone have a suggestion for a paint job that might look somewhat like a real car? Any roads that ran high side 40 foot steel cars? ...DaveB

November 2019 op session

Here's my updated blog with a report and lots of photos from the Nov 2019 operation session.

using arduino to sense when a building is occupied by a car

hello, I am trying to work out how to use an Arduino to sense when a building is occupied by a car, be it for loading or unloading. I have an Arduino and several infrared sensors (the kind with the receiver and emitter LEDs on one pcb) and have been looking for ideas on how to use them. I've found some ideas for parking sensors, but they use ultrasound sensors. the idea I have in mind is to use the IR sensors to detect a car and then light either a green LED (meaning the building is vacant) or a red LED (meaning the building is occupied).

Slag ballast

Anyone have tips on modeling slag for road bed ballast?  It's not quite black as coal but certainly darker than dark gray so it's a bit of a middle ground that I haven't found an alternative for yet.

Arizona rock doesn't  have anything that looked right so I'm debating getting a dark gray and mixing black paint powder with it or black ballast and mixing with a lighter color paint powder.  However I really have no idea if that will even work.

Class 1 Railroad Roundhouse Interior

I'm currently building a 14 stall roundhouse (Walthers kits), leaving the rear walls of 5 stalls open to the aisle allowing visitors to view the interior. What equipment would be present in a 1955 era roundhouse? I would think ladders and work benches but what else should I include?  Google searches have not gleaned much information. Any advise would be MUCH appreciated.

Airbrush Painting

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with my bottom siphon air brush. The air flow is not the issue, the paint is not being pulled form the bottle. I tried different air pressures with limited success. There was plenty of paint in the bottle, the paint was Polly scale. I believe I thinned the paint properly, maybe it wasn’t thin enough. I also checked the pickup tube from the bottle and the other passages are ok as best as I can tell.

One Trick Pony

Having spent a lot of time researching the prototype railroad I want to model...I have found out that they do one thing pretty good.

They move a lot of covered hoppers in grain service.

Looking to duplicate this in the model version...the idea looks to be that one trick pony. Visitors will not be able to differentiate between rice, soybeans, sorghum or wheat.
