Anyone have tips on modeling slag for road bed ballast?  It's not quite black as coal but certainly darker than dark gray so it's a bit of a middle ground that I haven't found an alternative for yet.

Arizona rock doesn't  have anything that looked right so I'm debating getting a dark gray and mixing black paint powder with it or black ballast and mixing with a lighter color paint powder.  However I really have no idea if that will even work.

I'm not going to mix various colors of ballast as the salt and pepper look stands out to me and is distracting.

They have a fine cinder ballast that might work for what you need?

what type of slag are you trying to emulate?

I'm from Western PA, grew up about a mile from some blast furnaces.  Slag from the furnaces was used for all sorts of purposes: we bought it like you buy crushed stone, either numbered or crusher-run - they're still "mining" the slag dump near my old home.  The slag I'm familiar with is a light grey, no where near black, more a limestone in color.   (Recently toured the Carrie furnaces in Pittsburgh - slag gravel was everywhere we walked - all light grey.)

I'd say one of the lighter color Woodland Scenic ballasts would be a good match for steel mill furnace slag.

What I've Done

I represented WP's smelter slag ballast using Scenic Express "Dark Gray" #40 ballast in HO.  It's similar to the material used by the D&RGW as well.

That looks about right to me

That Scenic Express #40 Dark Grey sure looks like the slag the Grande used on Tennessee Pass.

Scenic Express Dark Gray #40

I’ll second Rob Spangler’s recommendation:  I used Scenic Express Dark Gray on my Rio Grande layout.

I would like to see more of

I would like to see more of it.  Facebook seems to be the easy way to go about it anymore.  The organization of FB posts is chit when people start replying but it suffices.

Don't need a website, or Facebook.

Just start a blog here at MRH.  Lots of them already up, if you need inspiration.

It is the ticket.

It is the ticket.  Following Rob's recommendation I bought a jar of it for my planned D&RGW layout loosely following Grand Junction CO and west into Utah.

While Woodland Scenic makes

While Woodland Scenic makes many fine products I would stay away from their ballast products as much of it is crushed walnut shells which don't work as well as real, fine, mineral products like Arizona Rock and Mineral does.

I would guess the Scenic

I would guess the Scenic Express ballast Rob suggested would work as well as Arizona Rock and Mineral ballast.  Both are real rock ballast.  I'm happy enough with the Scenic Express and am not loyal to a particular brand as long as the size and color are right and it's real rock.
