DCC "Throw-pack" : choice of Win10 host "brains"...

Dear MRHers,

Having found myself (unexpectedly) faced with a small fleet of DCC locos,
with a variety of decoders from the major US-manufs,
(and a couple of oddballs, not to mention any "visiting units" that need help)

I'm seriously considering building a custom DCC test/programming rescue toolbox ("throw-pack").

Does anybody know anything about Miller Engineering???

As you proably know, Miller Engineering makes some excellent animated billboards, I have 3 on my layout now and would like to add  more.

The issue that popped up is that my latest acquisition, the large Nestle billboard, started loosing it's programming.  I have to constantly reprogram it, sometimes it runs for a couple of days, then fails, sometimes just one day and fails.

Digitrax Turnout Control(s)

As I was rummaging thru my storage trailer yesterday, I picked out an old control board I had picked up a couple of years ago.

It had two solid state boards on it that I sought to identify. According to the lettering printed on the boards, they are digital turnout controls.

Short Solo Session on the Shore Line

I'm discovering that there's nothing quite like the relaxation and pleasant diversion you get from just operating a local freight train. Lots of others got to this party before me, but - driven by the lack of formal op sessions - I've just recently arrived at this realization, having operated the outbound leg of the Airline Local just a few weeks ago.

Masking turnouts prior to painting

Good afternoon,

Everything I read about painting tracks talks about masking the turnouts prior to painting.  I'm sure I'm just Googling the wrong thing, but I can't find detailed instructions on how to do it.  Before I make a permanent mistake, does it look like I masked the turnout correctly?   Should I use more or less tape?  Is it in the right spots?  I plan on spray painting it using this color.

Bus Wire / Feeder Wire Installation Considerations

Bus Wire / Feeder Wire Installation Considerations

As I worked on the LED lighting of my dbl-deck layout I began to formulate different ideas as to how I might incorporate my bus wires and their feeder wires. Quiet naturally they will need to be attached under the deck they are serving, ...and in my case those undersides are just plain plywood surfaces, free of any reinforcing cross-beams as that are cantilevered out from those 2” square steel beams attached to the walls of the shed.

Whitetail, last town on the Soo Line

I was recently out of town on a scouting trip to find hunting and fishing locations in eastern Montana.  While I was out on the eastern side, I decided to take a couple hours one day and detour to the extreme western edge of the Soo Line at Whitetail, MT.  Other photos exist of this line, but I haven't seen any taken during the last few years so I was interested in seeing what the track conditions were like.  While the line is not abandoned, there is very little, if any, traffic west of the MT/ND border.  Even so, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the track was

Benny's Definitive Guide to Placing Cars in Car Spots Or Otherwise Appropriately Known as "Car Spotting"

(Pictures will be added as they can be located; all pictures used under Copyright Act Section 107 Subsection 1, 2, 3 and 4)

A couple weeks ago we had a discussion about how cars may be shoved around a right radial spur.  This lends itself to further discussion on how any industry might move cars while they are within their zone of control.

The details follow in the next post.
