Track Centers HO Scale

I'm in the process of reworking my small stub yard basically pulling up the #5 turnouts and replacing with #6's. I have very limited space but would like to add as much storage capacity as possible. I try to faithfully follow the recommendations of John Armstrong and in his book Track Planning for Realistic Ops he recommends a minimum of 2 inch track centers in freight yards. I would like to try 1 3/4 inch centers as this would give me 1 more track in my yard. Should I follow the master?

Searching for a Smokebox Front - 92" in diameter

I'm in the process of restoring several brass locomotives to operation and need some help with a part!

I am looking for an HO scale USRA-type Smokebox Front that is 92" in diameter.  It will be fitted to a Western Pacific Mikado and is the last item in a significant chain of work on this model.  I have checked with Greenway, Precision Scale, and searched EBay without luck.

Anyone having one that they could part with, please contact me!

IAIS's West End - On "Model Railroading Live" tonight

For anyone who may be interested, the IAIS's West End will be on "Model Railroading Live" on YouTube tonight starting at 8pm Central.  I'll be doing general Q&A and possibly giving a virtual layout tour.

Mumbai Railway

there is a web site called "curiosity stream"  that has a 4 part program ( 4 hours total ) on the passenger terminal in mumbai, india.

they move 80 million people a day in and out of mumbai, on a 97% on time record.  it's amazing.

the video service is 15 dollars a year, and the shows are varied and interesting.

DCC electronics cabinet?

All,

I'm building a cabinet to house my DCC electronics. I'm trying to decide if I need to put a door on the cabinet or leave it open in the front?

My basement is finished and climate controlled and there doesn't seem to be much dust, so I'm leaning toward leaving the front open with a fan on the inside to move air.

Any experience with this would be welcome. I'll post a picture when it's done; it's taking longer than I expected, as usual!

Thanks,

Lou Nigro

Trucks replaced the Trains

The trucks were the demise of the trains at Bingham Canyon Mine and this is what I drove when I worked at the mine, so we need to talk about Haulage Trucks.

Ballast for HO track

I am looking at either Arizona Rock & Mineral for Woodland Scenics rock gravel for ballast (HO). Can anyone provide an estimate of what coverage I could expect for a single track mainline using the ARM ballast (per bag) or the Woodland Scenics quart jar and 25 lb bag. For the woodland scenics I am not sure if the fine or medium is better for HO (or a combination of the two).

Decals, anyone try making their own using an inkjet printer?

I recently played with making my own decals using paper from Micro Mark on my Canon 600 series inkjet printer. My fiancée is a retired graphic designer/artist and made me some nice artwork. I printed a set on white and clear paper. Once I had the settings adjusted correctly it did a nice job of printing. I then sprayed the sheets with Krylon gloss spray from can per the instructions. After letting the Sheets dry I started cutting out the decals. The first thing that happened was they got little cracks through them and looked like drying mud!

Boxcar spotted in rural Kansas...

So I was out exploring in Montgomery County, outside Coffeyville spotted this derelict old boxcar on the side of the road.   Would love to know what railroad, but no markings other than yellow paint....about 40 feet long, double-sheathed.   Would guess Frisco as there was a line near here, but that's just a guess.  Any ideas?
