latest update
Ok, started working from hand sketches this morning and with the room i have available and what i want to acheive, i think im gonna go n scale with this thing. At least for this first preliminary design. Although i have a lot of resevrations with n scale, using it solves a lot of issues i am running into.
Super Helix!
I'm considering the installation of a helix in my current HO track plan. Because the layout room is rather compact I can only afford to build it with a maximum radius of 34" (after accounting for NMRA side clearances in a 6' area). Although this is not an issue, the railhead-railhead separation is a concern as I'd, ideally, like to keep the helix grade <= 2.0%. To achieve this I'm staring at an absolute minimum railhead separation somewhere between 4&
paragon 2 locos
G'day mates!
Raymond here from "down under".
Are there any issues running the Broadway Limited - Paragon2 locos. I use a DCC controloler from hornby, a pommy (English) firm who have a reputation for non complience. Do the Paragon2 things work OK with NCE or Digitrack?

ESU help!
HI all. I have been doing some ESU Loksound Select installs, mostly the FDL 16 in my P42's and EMD 710 in my EMD locos. I got the idea to try their latest V4 (the $150 pricey new released decoder) to see if it had any better sounds like the air compressor on the FDL 16 modern than the older select version. (so far haven't noticed a difference in sounds, but I haven't been able to find a sound modification CV table either).

Ok, things are looking more concrete. I am still in the sketching ideas stage and have nothing really ready to show here yet, but, here is how its looking for the layout.
Steel Caboose Rooftop Weathering
Any one have some photo examples of rooftop weathering for modern caboose or vans? Looking to weather the rooftop of a wide vision caboose but haven't been able to find any good examples.
NMRA National Convention will be in Grand Rapids,Mi this year - maybe some of these layouts on the tour
These are some photos taken at Lansing Legacies layout tours. Some of these layouts may be on the NMRA National convention 2012 layout tours. These ones shown are maybe 50 miles or more from Grand Rapidsbut well worth a visit.

Whole dead trees or glued together dead trees?
Regular readers know I have spent the better part of two years working on my room, valance, and lighting. With this work almost complete the day is nearing when I actually start building benchwork for my railroad. Hurrah!
It is decision time - plywood or pine?
My room does not see drastic temperature swings. It is heated in winter and air conditioned in summer along with the rest of the house. We do not experience Arizona dryness or Georgia humidity. I guess you could say the environment in my train room is very moderate.
