Is there an "easy" way to .....

..... make a mirror copy of a fairly complex kit part?. Have a very old kit, manufacturer closed eons ago, that is missing just one piece, but I have the other one (an exact mirror image). If I REALLY have to, I can shape it from wood or plastic. Is there an easier way?. Jose.

Desert Grande Layout Part 2 Progress

So with my club layout area spruced up and the chores out of the way - those other projects I had on the burners, though there's a lot still on there! - I took a moment to relax with a little work...this has been in the works, while I plotted out my $500 layout...I've embellished upon the initial plan quite a bit, so we're a bit beyond the scope of the initial $500 "getting started" project.

I went ahead and put all the prior work in this blog here:

AP Award Structure

Here are some pictures of the scratch built structure I submitted for AP Merit points. After judging it received 92 pts out of 125 max.

Radio Control

I live near a major rail yard and often see engineers "on the ground" controlling their switching locomotives with a small "belt pack" radio control unit.

Here is a close up of a typical controller.

Promoting the Hobby - or, A Portable Layout, Part 6

So this all started about a month ago when a message was left on my voicemail at work by the owner of what was the best hobby shop in Salem, OR before he retired and closed it. We also have a relationship through my current job as well. Suffice it to say, he knew I was into model railroading.

Train Detection and/or Observation on Hidden Track

I have several locations on my recently started layout that will have some hidden trackage where I plan to stage trains.  I had originally planned to use optical detectors to show me where a train is on this track and when to stop it (when returning to staging).

I've been wondering though if I should consider using several cameras strategically placed, all tied to a small monitor.  It seems that it would be easier to determine exactly where the trains are, their speed, direction, etc. using a system like this.

Just read about a new 3D printing concept

Apparently Staples is going to roll out 3D paper printing on the model of just bringing in the design and print it.  This is starting rollout in the spring and is figured to expand to all Staples stores.

So, how is this going to effect modeling.  Will we be able to design out custom models and then just walk down to Staples and print them out?

The article went on to say that this was to be 3D paper printing.  So, we can't build running engines this way, but I'll bet we could do buildings and custom car interiors?
