Couplers

I have acquired a group of cars with various  types of couplers. What I want to do is, of course, go to one type, Kadee's, Which is the better, #5's or #58's?  And why? Which is the more popular? An inquiring mind want's to know and so do I.I just know this is going to make some opinions known, strongly. Thanks.

DCC with <12V motors?

I'm looking at using some motors rated at less than 12VDC in a few models.  Specifically, I'm thinking of using 3V and 6V motors.  I know that a decoder can be programmed to limit maximum voltage, but I have some questions.

Mabuchi motor specs?

I have two Mabuchi can motors for which I'm trying to find speed and voltage information.

The first is model FF-180PH.  It is also marked below the model number "KN 15 81 10".  The Mabuchi web side does list a motor with that model number, though it specifies an extension of the model number.  The motor on the web site is a nominal 2.4V motor.  I need to find out if that's the case for this motor as well, since I have several and would like to use them in a few models.

Western Pacific 8th Subdivision Layout Tour

Progress on the layout has slowed for the moment due to some ongoing projects like adding a basement bathroom and crew lounge.  Since I've received several requests for a walk-around tour kinda thing, I'm shamelessly cribbing from what Tom Johnson has done on his L&IN photo thread.  As I go, I'll explain how a few things operate, as well as some of the design decisions.

Neat Wiring

Here’s a neat way to organize your wiring… I use Drive Rings. They are economical and simple to use. I used the 1/2″ size. They cost about $15 for 100 pc.s.

Painting Boxcar Underbody/Under frame

I am planning on painting the underbody and under frames of several 50' boxcars. These boxcars are of the modern era (1980-95). Do I use a traditional black or go with a rust color or etc. I would like to be somewhat proto-typical.
