1900 models - a furniture boxcar

A few years ago I started to add a few scratchbuilt and kitbashed freight cars on my 1900 train. One of the first models was this 50' furniture boxcar that I built from two MDC old-time boxcars.

Dust free coal

My wife asked me to get some dog food from Petco today so I went to get it. Besides model railroading I'm interested in saltwater fish so I looked around a bit and accidently found something that might be used to model coal:

For $4.99 you get 5 pounds of black sand that looks pretty much like coal without the dust. Here's a picture after I filled it in a jar:

What's your oldest structure?

The recent thread:

regarding help in finding some old Revell structure kits has prompted me to start this one.  What is the oldest structure kit on your pike?

DCC Power Bus LocoNet Proximity

My planned layout has extended sections of benchwork that are 6, 9 and 12 inches in depth.
If I run the main powerbus close to the back wall, will there be an issue with the LocoNet cable running along the fascia? (Power bus likely 14ga)

Thanks in advance.

Work on my layout addition

Today I continued with my layout addition.
Here the result.

Proto 2000 Gear Train Binding?

I recently purchased a Proto 2000 - Lifelike GP9 Limited Edition Phase III locomotive off of Ebay. This was a new in the box unit, that was undecorated. I bought this loco as a first for installing a DCC encoder in a DC loco. I also bought it a as first for learning how to airbrush a model. I got the DCC encoder installed, along with some custom LEDs for the number boards and the headlights. All the DCC, and the custom LEDS are working fine.

"Structures in tight places" is a good article in the March issue, and I had a similar though smaller project.
