How do you guys handle getting a consistent grade built......

.......when you are doing your bench work?  I understand how to determine the height-distance thing but getting my grades to be a CONSISTENT say 3% is very hit or miss when it comes to curved grades.  A straight grade is easy but when the tracks curve it gets hard.  Looking for tips.  I’m using 1/2” plywood with a layer of 1/2” Homasote on top as my roadbed which is about 4” wide for single track.

HO code 100 and Code 73 on same line?

First post. Resurrecting my layout.  Lots of code 100 from old layout I had to tear down due to move, but want to use  Code 70 in new layout in areas that are more visible.   Are there any products such as a transition track that serve as a "connection" between the two Codes?

Arthur and Magna Mills for Bingham canyon mine.

Copper king mine has a mill area, but nothing like the two large mill for the Utah Copper (Kennecott) Bingham canyon mine, I will show them both.

A modern Shortline in HO

I thought I would start a blog on my attempts to model a modern shortline railroad in limited space.  I live in the UK so any research I do is all web-based.

I have been modeling North American Railroads on and off for 25 years or so but have never managed to complete a layout, hopefully now is the time!

Inspired by Lance Mindhiem, Mike Confalone, and Jack Hill I am modeling a small single industry layout, something I can complete to a standard I would be happy with.

Short circuit (of the mind)

Before my recent hiatus from working on the layout I could have sworn I had my test version of DCC++ hooked up and running and I did at one point. I remember having to go back and catch a couple of feeder drops on some spurs and gaping some frog rails on my Peco turnouts.

Swap Meet "Kitbash" Exterior and starting interior

Right now I'm figuring out problems and figuring out details.

3-D printed motorcar shell

Hello everyone!

I am modeling the Missouri & Arkansas railroad and I would like to have an ACF Motorailer but of course none are available and my scratch building skills are not good enough. I wonder if it would be possible to 3-D print a shell that could fit a existing powered unit. The Bachmann doodlebug is very close dimensionally and this is what I had in mind for the power unit for the shell. Have any of you had any experience with something like this? Is there a 3-D printer out there that you have worked with?

Walthers/Kibri buildings

I have purchased a few of the snap together Cornerstone kits. I am wanting to paint them more realistic colors. Has anyone had luck separating the "glass" from the doors and windows

"Dues paid" Model Rail certificate

It's been mentioned a time or two, that "you've paid your dues" as a railroad modeler if you've tackled some project, even if it kicked your asterisk to the curb without breaking a sweat.  Two of these, I've had personal experience with, and I'm wondering what other lost cause I might have tried in the past to gain the coveted "Hat Trick".

My "Don Quixote" list so far includes:

The Front Range / McKean 60' Centerbeam Flat Car kit, an ongoing grind...
