Pokey Progress: Onward & Upward - Jan '15

Having completed the staging deck on my new layout it was time to tackle the two lower helices that raise trains up to the main deck level. Here's a photo account, along with a few comments...

The base of the helix is made up of 5/8" plywood to provide a sturdy foundation for everything above. The board across the middle with old cork roadbed on it is a temporary brace to keep the L-girder bench work square and will be removed once the helix is completed.

HO Scale Skylights

Good evening to all. A quick question to see if anyone would have an idea where I could get HO scale skylights for a warehouse? I would even build them if need be.

Thanks

Good Alco PA Sound?

Is there any existing production HO scale model of the Alco PA's, or aftermarket sound product, that has sound (particularly horn) as good as the PA prototype loco in this video??

MRC Controlmaster 20

I have an MRC Controlmaster 20 walkaround power supply that went on the fritz yesterday.  It has been a great unit for at least 12 years now.  I had an engine derail, and when I set the engine back on, it took off at high speed.  I am unable to control speed, momentum or braking with the throttle.  Only thing I can do is change direction.  As soon as turn on the power, whichever engine I use just takes off.  All of the switches  are properly set.  Something must have shorted out.

Future project: The D&RGW's Maverick Canyon branch in HOn3

On this blog I will share the design process of a future modeling project...a unique free-lanced D&RGW branch in HOn3, set in an atypical region of southwestern Colorado. Here are some photoshpped concept photos that help capture what I will be aiming for.

Greenpoint Dock & Transfer Company - Organizing a Workspace

As part of my basement remodel I’ve been able to set aside a good sized workbench/storage space.  What I’d be interested in learning from other is how you’ve organized yours.

Need some help guys

ok guys I have the train room ready to start building a layout. I have been looking at track plans like there is no tomorrow. I have the entire which is 11x17.  in the pic the "dashed" area will be on casters to allow access to the closet (holiday decor and misc.) The entrance into the room will have a lift out bridge. I am thinking of a yard under the layout...I've played around with SCARM, and not very happy with the results..I'm open to ideas, plans, comments etc...I'm modeling the mid to late 90s.

In search of the perfect ties

Work is progressing on my Milan branch of the IAIS. I’ve been laying roadbed and testing different approaches for tie distress and staining. Take a look at the images with captions in the next post.

The Lone Rock Diorama

Recently I've been working on a small, portable diorama to demonstrate rock making techniques and to serve as a base for photographing models outdoors. Building the Lone Rock diorama is the subject of today's Thunder Mesa website post.
