Smoking Power Supply

The last time I ran my layout was some weeks ago and everything was just fine. Last night I had an opportunity to get back to it and run some trains.  Switched on the power supply  to my DCS 100 picked up my D402 throttle and selected an engine without problems but then tried turning on the loco lights and nothing.  After a few seconds of head scratching I realised I had no track power.

At this point I went back to my control cabinet and saw smoke coming out of my power supply. I switched it off immediately and took it outside.

Using Berrett Hill Touch Toggles with MRServo

One of the most interesting electronic parts to come on the market lately is Berrett Hill’s Touch Toggles.  They’re little electronic switches that operate by the proximity of your finger.  There’s no mechanical movement, so you can put them behind acrylic control panel faceplates and other such and still operate them just by touching the surface.  Unlike a mechanical switch, they never wear out, and they come with built-in indicator lights.

Here is a MOW train you could model

Driving from Boise to Lewiston I saw this neat little work train on the Idaho Northern Pacific Thunder Mountain line. They were using one of their newly acquired GP9 for their sister railroad the Nebraska Central. The other two cars were a Side dump car similar to the Difco car from Walthers and short Union Pacific flat car similar to the offering by Exactrail. The excavator could easily be modeled by using one of the offerings from Norscot.

O Scale Questions

Being an HO modeler I was surprised to learn that common O Scale equipment runs on track that has a scale 5' width as opposed to the standard 4' 8.5". I'm assuming everything else is the correct proportion just the wheel gauge is a little (1/10" or so) wider.

1/10" isn't a big deal just surprising. Kind of wanted confirmation that every manufacturer (Atlas, MTH, Lionel, etc.) is making equipment that runs on 5' scale width track be it 2 or 3 rail.

Track work inches forwards

I have finally got around to working on my layout again. Here is the new segment of my layout's road bed. Also, I have solved the problem of my lionel cars that are equipped with electro couplers. Since I inherited these ones, I wanted to respect them and not modify the cads in any way. I also inherited their magazine and catalouge collection, in which was a vintage Great Model Railroads MR special.

Caboose Servicing Facilities

I'm trying to figure out why you need to get to the top of a caboose for servicing? I guess I can see possibly cleaning the windows.

Several manufacturers have structures like this for sale:

I get the lower oil tank or even a coaling area for older cars. Even water fills were lower.

Need help identifying a loco

Hi, I am trying to figure out the kind of locomotive I used to see in the U.P. of Michigan. It looked like a GP20 but had 3 axles per truck instead of 2. It reminded me of a SD40-2 except half the length. Any ideas on what kind of locomotive it might be? thanks!
