Help modeling a scrap dealer with crane

I’ll be including a scrap / recycling dealer on my layout and would like some input on what others have done to model large piles of metal scrap effectively. See attached photos.

Also, does anyone know if there are good, detailed models of magnetic cranes used in those lots, perhaps even a hydraulic claw that grabs large piles of scrap?

Did anyone talk to Intermountain about GP10?

I’d like to know if anyone who was at the National Train Show talked with Intermountain about the status of their GP10s? Are they going to make this model a priority and get it done?

I saw the picture Jeff Schultz posted and it looks like there is hardly any progress on that model from almost nine months ago.

It’s been a LONG wait.

Thanks,

Build an optical detector circuit

The simple crossing signal circuit was designed to be operated by a manual switch, but it's fairly easy to automate it. This thread will start with a basic two detector version but eventually I hope to present a way to add as many detectors as you like and a time delay circuit to let trains clear before releasing the crossing. This circuit depends on ambient light to operate, but the level needed to trigger it is adjustable.

This is the schematic:

Curved Turnouts using CVT turnout ties

In another post, I mentioned that I have made some curved turnouts using CVT plastic turnout ties.  Someone asked me to post information about what I have done. so here it is.

Background:

I follow the techniques described by Joe Fugate in this wonderful article with a few small changes:

One for Prof Klyzr

I have a wonder about the Land Down Under, Prof!

Over at nScale.net, one of the forum members posted a neat little vintage 8mm clip of the Graham County Railroad from the early 1960s. Coal-burning Shays on a common carrier, interchanging with the Southern Railway -- pretty intriguing stuff, I'd say.

Using Foam and Hot Knifes

Many good how too videos on this one done recently on MRH. Here is how I use the foam and the tools to create my scenery on the Grande Pacific Railroad. Need to watch two videos on The Big Scene to have full understanding

How dangerous would it be to space HO Tangent Track 1.5" on center?

I have a need for  two short staging tracks for an interchange with another railroad, and to fit it in the space I have for it, requires the straight sections to be spaced 1.5" on center instead of the usual/typical 2" on center.  As I measure most of the equipment I have (modeling circa 1953) I believe there should not be any clearance issues.  I don't intend to run locomotives on these sections of track, they only are for the incoming and outgoing cars for interchange throughout the operating session.  Has anyone successfully done this without issue?&nbsp

Friday, Day 1 of the National Train Show

Today I changed my shirt.

Okay, after you get done with the "ewwww"s, I'll have it known that I did have two of those orange PDX 2015 staff shirts. And I wore them both.

So I bought the Club Layout...

In the year before I went away for work, my club spent a fair amount of time planning new projects and came to the conclusion that it was time to design a new layout.  Naturally, this meant the old layout would have to go, which meant it was for sale, and for a time I ignored this reality whereas I was thousands of miles away.  As the months went by there were no offers, I got to thinking that if the layout was not sold, then it would have to be torn down.  What more, sicne my tour was coming to a close and as luck would have it, I would be back in t

Building a Junk Yard

Hey again everyone! I've decided to take a break from scenery (especially trees) for a bit to move onto something more exciting for me.

For the past week I've been working on my scrap yard. It's not a rail served industry on my layout because of space constraints but what I'll mention here today will help with the junk itself, not the operation.
