Modeling topic
B&O in Southern Indiana
Well the Layout is still under construction but we are getting closer and closer to having the main line and staging yard finished with the track portion. We still have to lay the track for the Grain Mill and then the bottom level will be finish. Then comes the wiring of the staging yard and installing the tortoise switch machines.
Removal of DCC from Spectrum 45 ton switcher
I ordered a Bachmann/Spectrum 45 ton switcher engine in HO. My layout is not DCC nor is it straight DC. It is a home brewed PWM (250HZ). So the dual input (analog DC or DCC) decoder will have to go. I have other engines (some Spectrum) that were originally DCC but the modules were easily removed and replaced with a header that allows pure DC only operation. If I remember correctly the DC header may not be required as removal of the DCC module leaves the engine setup for DC only operation (???). But my old memory is not 100%, to say the least.

Kanawha & Lake Erie Railroad- Update
UPDATE: For those of you interested in hearing the story behind the K&LE and seeing some great video footage of the layout in operation, it's featured in the September edition of TrainMasters TV. Here's a link to the preview: http://trainmasters.tv/video-player/tmtv-2014-09-act-i-preview. And here's a link to some photos of John's incredible steel mill complex: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/14244.

Almost got into 1:32 scale (3/8" scale)
I was digging around in a box of stored models and came a cross a project I must have started about 15 years ago. It's a representation of a Garford maintenance of way & fire fighting truck that rides on the rails, 3 foot gauge. The plans were published in the Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette in 1989. The drawing was done by Al Armatige. About 2009 Precision Scale Company did a brass model in On3.
Here's what the PSC model looked like.

Fun-themed layout/module
I was looking back through some older threads and a couple of topics ran together in my head and triggered an intriguing idea. Gabe and his son are doing a movie theme layout. We also had some fun with cute names for railroads and places.
All of which made me think about a possible module (not sure I'd want to do a whole layout) lifted from the comic pages. I've always been a Walt Kelly fan, so maybe visit with Pogo and all the gang down in the Okeefenokee would be fun. Or maybe a trip through Dogpatch with L'il Abner, Daisy Mae and the rest of the Yokum clan.
Pembroke II: Lines
My daughter's first recognizable picture was an apple. She was perhaps three, and at the time she was already a prolific artist, producing mostly pages of coloured straight, parallel lines. But this day, I was working on the endless basement reno, and she came down and presented me with a beautiful red apple with a green leaf. "Oh, what a wonderful apple!" I exclaimed. She beamed and went upstairs to produce more, reappearing a few minutes later with a sheet of parallel lines. "Lovely!" I exclaimed, "What is it?" She looked at me with the look that I hadn't expected her to perfect for at least another ten years, the look that says "Oh, Daddy, you are so dense!" and she explained, "It's lines."
What did Andrew and I (the other member of the posse being in Nevada) get up to last night?
Lines.
Two roughly parallel lines.

Blogging my MRH Memorial Day to Labor Day Challenge REDUX (with new and improved title)
So here we are, just starting the Second Annual MRH Memorial Day to Labor Day Challenge. You can find the opening thread here. SIne I jumped in last year, I decided to do it again this year. Being a good, government employed process guy, I looked over last year's thread. Here's what I planned to do then:
Compressing a real structure/area
Hi All
I have a couple of real industries that I want to model. Looking for some pointers and/or suggestions besides what I think below ( that also can be changed ).
Hopper Cars Inside
Ok, on another thread there is a VERY nice finish for a hopper car. The rest effect looks great.
The question is, how rusty did the inside of hoppers get. Note that I am modeling 1943.
Trying to find photos (preferably color) of hoppers insides is not easy.
