Painting steam locomotive running gear

With the demise of Floquil and Polyscale (not that that necessarily has much to do with this) I'm wondering what brands/colors of paint folks use to detail the side rods, eccentrics, rockers, etc. of their steam locomotives.

If you have steam engines on your layout for other applications (pumps, donkey engines/loaders, etc.) do you paint/weather those any differently than locomotives?

When considering the piston rods, do you try to make them look polished?  If so, how?

Railway Design Associates

Is anyone familiar with Railway Design Associates? I had never heard of them until today, when I came across one of their products on eBay. Their Fisherman's Co-op looks like it might fill a need on my layout. Transplanted from harbor side to rural Tennessee, it looks like it would make a credible tobacco warehouse.

Since I have never seen any RDA models up close, not even a decently large photo, I wonder about the detail and quality of their kits.

Testors Paint Line

Any word on the status of Testors product lines?

Spotlight on details. What is missing?

Some close-up pictures from my new layout Redstone Branch.

I don't know ... but I think that something is missing.

Good weekend to all, friends modelers.

Scale Model Animation 5 – Building Building Animation

Model animation—bringing models to life—adds enormously to the interest and enjoyment of any layout or individual model! We notice things when they move, and we often notice things only when they change. But change can also be sensed in light intensity, patterns, color, and sound. Let’s see what can bring an otherwise static building to life.

The Timberman trade magazine

Bumped into some interesting things today. These are from  The Timberman trade magazine, October 1915. Thought I would share with everyone here, lots of neat things in this magazine.

Thinking about getting a new Shay Locomotive? They have them in stock at Hofius Steel & Equipment Co. !

How about a new fangled gasoline powered railcar made by Hofius to transport the work crews?

Background painting attempt No. 2

Update - embedded the picture in the post. This is my second attempt this time painted on a piece of blue foam.

Older Version Athern axle gears p/n 60023

My club has several older Athearn diesels that we want to "rejuvenate".  Some of them need to have their gears replaced (Ernst gears...really noisy).  Trouble is..some of them have the old metal outside frames and we need to replace the Ernst axle gears with the original Athean axle gears p/n 60023.  These 60023s are slightly larger in diameter than the newer 60024s and the hubs are wider...they are not interchangeable.  I have tried my usual Athearn sources and they don't have these 60023ss.  Does anyone know of a source?
