Locos - Rolling stock (general)

The Beast from the East

I happen to have (read had) a happier than normal paypal account; due to the fact that I've been selling off other non-train hobby related items these past few weeks. So there's this auction up on eBay....and I'm thinking to myself, well, the last thing I need right now is another locomotive - especially an expensive brass jobby.

But.....

So I looked at my paypal account, and placed a bid.

And I won!

Covered Hopper Hatches and Commodity

With regards to the type of hatches on similar type covered hoppers, were they specicfic to the type of commodity being transported? There were/are square hatches, round hatches and the car length rectangular hatches.  In modeling  various dry chemical/plastic pellets, fertilizers, grains and sand, what is the appropriate style, if any, for the hatches?

Traveling car thread...

I'm using the blog here, to chronicle the traveling cars I've hosted.

First we'll see TWP 5658, a covered hopper lettered for The Whistle Post, another online forum. I hosted this car back in early 2009. She received a new set of trucks, as the ones on here were too tight, and fragile.
TWP 5658

In November 4 other members of Model Railroad Forums, and myself, joined forces for a 5 car roundabout. The first car arrived today.

Updaing a Ken Kidder 0-4-0t

I picked up this little guy in a local auction - I had no idea what it was, and I simply bid blindly on an assorted box.

Turns out he covered my costs pretty well. You can see the original thread here.

The model was identified by another Forum member (shout out to Joe Brugger) as a Ken Kidder brass import, and it turns out he's right on the money.

A moment of weakness, or how I got box of junk

So....I had a momentary lack of weakness, and put a bid at a local estate auction for a box of HO. I didn't look too closely, and fortunately I didn't bid too much.

Come to find out, I won it. So I went down and picked it up. So what did I get?

A CP gp38m and A CN SW, both Athearn blue box

Tyco? BN F unit and three freight cars along with a CN F and a Soo. All tyco or similar.

Confused and wondering.....

Hi all,

Since I am still home afther that surgery I had, I am working on my layout, groundcovering, ballasting and so on. Now between all that I started doing a little inventory of my rolling stock and went online to see if there was some thing I could add.

Tank Cars

I need information about AC&F type 21 riveted tank cars.  I do know that the 21 designation means cars designed in 1921.  Type 27 cars were designed in 1927.  I'm not certain about type ICC 103.  Prior to type ICC103w or welded tank cars in the late forties, when was the last year anyone built a riveted tank car?  Anyone?

The Black Caboose

It's nice having someone in your ops crew that likes to paint locos and rolling stock. Here's what Joe Brugger did to an undec Athearn blue box bay window caboose.
