Locos - Rolling stock (general)
Bowser #100475 Northern 4-8-4 All Metal locomotive kit
Hi guys,
I have a question for you. I was looking at buying a Bachman 2-8-4 Berkshire with DCC for 999 South African Rands (about $87), but now also have the option of getting my hands on a Bowser #100475 All metal Northern 4-8-4 locomotive kit (incl. tender), but also including the #100485 Super Detail kit, for ZAR 1,200 (about $104). I would definitely want to convert the loco to DCC&Sound, but not sure how to do that.
I am new to the hobby, and would therefore like your opinions/assistance on the following two questions:
Model trains - made from wood
February 2015 - a large model railroad exhibition in Dresden/Germany
- including a great modeler with his friends who have built their models from wood for 5 in. track gauge (127 mm) and 80 mm narrow gauge (3 ft.)
Look their fantastic works!
Kansas, Oklahoma & Gulf GP7 and Midland Valley caboose in HO scale
Here's a couple of shots of a KO&G GP7 I stripped and painted for the prototype. The locomotive is a Bachmann DCC Sound unit. I tried several model paint stripers and the only thing that worked was 91% rubbing alcohol. I added sun shades, lift rings and the wire hand holds up the nose on the front and back. The 3" stripes are from Microscale's white decal set for 3" and 4" stripes and the KO&G logo is from Odd Ball decals.
Missouri Pacific Eagle Merchandise Service and NOT&M boxcars
Here's a couple of Mopac boxcars I finished last year. Both are resin kits that I started over 20 years ago and the building got stalled. The NOT&M boxcar began life as a Dennis Storzek SOO Line boxcar with a 5' door. Martin Lofton, of Sunshine Models, wrote an article in RMC on how to convert the Soo Line kit into a NOT&M boxcar.
The Great Purge
The last of my non-relevant rolling stock has left the building, and this is my entire roster as of today: One locomotive and four freight cars. I've ordered more cars which suit my planned layout, but as of this moment I've never had so little equipment since I first started dabbling in this hobby in 1997.
Close, but Not Quite
If there is a "signature car" on the BCRY, it would be the grey DM&E ribside covered hoppers which Tag receives. First, let me give you a quick primer on what Tag does: They are a manufacturer of geosynthetic clay liners, for use as waterproof barriers in landfills, ponds, canals etc. The main ingredient is Bentonite clay, of which they receive about 100 hoppers annually from two mines in Wyoming. One mine is served by BNSF, the other by DM&E.
1900 models - and still something older!
One of my older projects was to build this 52' B&O boxcar where the prototype was built in 1867! Nearly 150 years ago!
I was fascinated to build this model where the body looks like a hopper with sloped ends - however where the car was used as a boxcar for transport of flour barrels!
IAIS's West End - Completed Jordan Spreader
I've been wanting to model Iowa Interstate's Jordan Spreader #9500 (ex-RI 95319) for years, but it's a significant kitbash using the Walthers spreader kit as a starting point. Recently, though, I was able to get a good deal on a disassembled, partially-stripped OMI UP Jordan Spreader that, with a few minor changes, would be a perfect match for the 9500. This thread will chronicle all aspects of the model's return to service.
Marker lights on a PRR bay window caboose
Can someone tell me what kind of marker lights are on a PRR bay window caboose?
Is P:48 worth it?
My modest modern fleet consists mostly of Atlas 2R equipment and I have a few modules completed. It is now time to decide, before the layout is built, continue in 5 ft gauge or switch to P:48.
