Building with Balsa-wood.
Building with Balsa-wood.
Not every one has easy access to Strip-wood, some like us in Australia live at the end of the hobby world. There are many hints on this site about working with Balsa-wood.

First things First;
Mine Buildings
Spent a little money over the last couple of days on some building supplies - styrene, card, glue. I'm going to start building my mine buildings. My little pike is going to be centred around it, so it is my logical first step.
I'm using the plans the Jack Work published in a three part series in October, November and December 1959.
My layout is very likely going to change a little according to these mine buildings, but I expected that.
Clump Foliage
I recently purchased Joe's DVD series. In part 2 of the scenery DVD he mentions purchasing larger more economical sizes of foam products. I currently use Woodland Scenics 3 quart size of light green and medium clump foliage. What is the equivalent product number for Scenic Express or other brands?
Thanks for your help.

JL&T Railroad Blog - Chain Link Fences...
Hi All,
A little while ago I posted a question relating to the various chain link fence kits available in HO, and which one people found to be the most realistic and easiest to install. My experience so far has been only the Walther's kit, but I have ordered the BLMA kit and am awaiting it's arrival.
Giant Trestle
Hi Jack from Star, Idaho, I have completed quite a large trestle project and I am about done with the scenery. The trestle is seven feet six inches long (652 scale feet) and supports three main lines. By the time I was finished I had over 3200 pieces installed. The trestle has minature red led air craft marker lights (nine per side) and lighting shinning down on the rail line below it. The trestle stands about 80-85 scale feet high. I have added a lot of detail to include cat walks and railing on both sides, workers on the bridge and signallin
What is the best way to work with styrene brick sheets to make walls?
Hello,
I want to scratch build my childhood home, which was "standard" brick construction. I've purchased a number of styrene brick pattern sheets from a number of vendors and they are all flimsy. Walthers makes a thick styrene brick sheet, but it won't work for my application.
Scenery
O.K. I don't usually particisipate in these things, but in my quest to find the best item at the least expensive price I ran across this company in the U.K. This probably isn't going to qualify for cost effective in any shape or form, but the examples I saw on their site were akin to small sculptures. They only seem to manufacture on order after a 25% down payment is made. I didn't see any price listing, so I'm sure it's going to run kinda high. If anyone has done business with this company please e-mail me with info that I couldn't find out on site.
Inexpensive scenery construction?
I look at all the wonderful materials that are out there for creating landscape... trees, mountains, grasslands, etc. But I look around me at stuff on the farm that could be used almost as effectively for free!
I've been experimenting with flour/water glue and wood shavings, dyed with either food color or tempera paint. Is there anything I should be thinking about before using this kind of mixture?
