What's your "Golden" memory of railroading?

We all have something inside us that fuels the passion. A childhood memory of railfanning or growing up and playing by the rails. Something!!! Without exception, everybody was once a newbie with no experience; nothing but some inspirational memory.

Charlie's idea on using static grass for scenery other than grass

Charlie shared an interesting technique on the "Bush Hop Field" thread  - http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/4077 on using static grass on a piece of bare copper wire and then flocking it with ground foam.  Although it doesn't look much like hops, it got me thinking about using his technique to make small (and cheap) trees & bushes.  I took some green 26 ga florist wire and multiplied it to create about 14 "limbs".  I applied the white glue and used my static applicator with a mixture of 2mm to 6mm static grass.  Once that was dried, I s

Trains in the Wilderness. BC Rail's North End Lives on in N Scale

Some steady progress over the last few months has allowed more trains to cross the Peace River on the N Scale Fort St. John Subdivision.   Northern British Columbia, Canada is a remote place and there aren't many trains, but here are a couple I caught crossing the bridge.

A little comfort for the shack

I recently completed a shack for the foreground area "redo" by Hoovertown and since it's in a rual area it needed a little "comfort"  The first picture shows the outhouse in relation to the shack - not too far away, and not too close!

This is a closeup picture - all the comforts of home (there's a Sears catalog inside next to the seat).

Textured latex paint

I have a fairly large area that I want to put a red/brown dirt texture on before starting ground foam for vegetation. I've read the recent zip texture article and may try that. I've tried sanded tile grout and it seems tough to get it to look decent but also be completely bonded.

N Scale Figures

All - I need some guidance. I keep seeing all these exceptional layouts with figures (people) in work related clothing or period clothing. I am modeling N scale (30's to late 50's), but cannot find the figures I am looking for that era. Any advise or links to order on line?

Thanks

Weathering

Today I feel like raising heck: I see all those beautiful models of a (insert favourite period here) (item) all modeled to the nth degree and awesomely weathered to the nth also. Say a 1900's structure placed in a 1920's era layout. The structure looks like is falling apart already, never mind that it is supposed to be only 20 years old with an almost junk Ford T (that could be brand new at that time frame) parked at front. Does not look right to me. Am I nuts?. Weathering is an art, just has to be done within an armonious timeframe.

Ghost River Trestle

This is the most recent addion to the infrastructure of the Ghost River Rwy. A scratchbuilt trestle over the Ghost River gorge. The wood is cut to scale. I mainly used fir and cedar. The footings still need to be made and the water poured, but the threstle is otherwise finished. I deliberately placed some crossmembers between the bents, and the railing around the fire platform, on angles to give the trestle an aged look. Had lots of fun building the trestle.
