Cornhill and Atherton - Insular Gorge
Now that the lower deck track work is complete I can move on to the (arguably) more interesting subject of scenery.
I have three major project areas - Glanton, Cornhill and Insular Gorge and it's the latter I am starting with because the ideas are most developed for this section. Also, track testing continues in the two towns, whereas Insular Gorge is simple straight track through a scenic section:

Limestone bluffs?
I'm modeling, in N scale, the East Dubuque, Ill., area (IC, CB&Q, CGW) as it appeared in 1960-66. It is full scale, that is, no compression, so I've got my work cut out for me - I don't know how to go about modeling the limestone bluffs (a photo at RailPictures by Mike Danneman, with a west/north bound BN train, shows the bluffs in question):
Small Fuel Oil Dealers
Has anybody out there modeled a small Fuel Oil Dealer? If so would you be able to post up some pictures. I have built the Walthers McGraw Oil Dealer kit and am having a bit of a issue with how to place the various pieces. The instructions are a bit vague as to what might go where. I have a area that is wedged shaped, and serviced by one siding track which can hold 3 tank cars, but does have room enough for all of the items. I setup the 4 storage tanks in a straight line as opposed to the kits instructions which puts them in a square pattern.
Scalples vs Xacto knives
While at the National Train Show today, I was talking to a woman about scratch building wooden structures. She said that she prefers scalples over xacto knives because they are sharper, stronger and can be sharpened. I thought I would try a couple. When I searched scalples in amazon.com I discovered that they also come in blade sizes similar to hobby knives. Does anyone know if a number 11 xacto blade and a number 11 scalple are basically the same?
Frugal Modeling tip - Inexpensive Pipes
Water balloon technology has produced an auto fill balloon cluster that can be the source of inexpensive pipes for your model railroad. The balloon clusters can be found on the shelves of your local Wal-Mart or CVS.
Is there such a thing as a "walk only" track crossing?
I am a bit squeezed for space between these tracks and I would like to make a "walk only" crossing over one of the industry tracks. The building is a Quonset hut and in the image is the wrong way round. It should be showing the office door. In the UK we have small crossings just for foot use. Does the same happen in the US?

Building model trains is, and has been, a lifelong passion.
By definition my hobby is a pastime and not done for income or to please anyone other than myself. That sounds selfish and self centered but really true.
On the other hand I really love to share my efforts with those who understand. This forum has been that community.
Beef Packing Plant illuminated interior details
Our club (Scarborough Model Railroaders, Toronto, Canada, era around 1958) is starting a project to illuminate the interiors of the buildings on our HO scale layout. I have volunteered to work on an interior for our beef packing plant.
