Classification Yard right next to Staging?

Does one put a classification yard right next to staging, and why would you do that?

It's really bugging me as I can't find much information about it. Yes, I see layout plans where people do this but what is the reasoning behind it...from operational point of view.

Starting Over

Old Layout is Gone

I have finished dismantling the old layout (benchwork made of studs and decking screws with 1/2" ply top). Track was laid but never wired up when I decided to abandon and go TOMA.

Ontario Branch line in HO - Inglewood-Cataract-Fergus-Elora

I am beginning a journal of my layout design and construction.  This is an HO scale, rural branch line situated in southern Ontario circa 1957.  I am certainly not the first person to model this area I will cite some of my insparations in the next entry.

Please see my Givens & Druthers attached below as a PDF questionaire.

How many colors of wire do you use and for what function(s)?

In connection with the discussion about sources for purchasing wire I'm curious which colors of insulation people choose and what colors are assigned to which functions.  Sorting out DCC bus lines and lines for switch motors or other accessories is obvious but with the advent of so many electronic devices I'm wondering what systems folks use on their own layouts to keep all this stuff more clearly identifiable and organized.

New layout - early working draft

I moved last fall and have been pretty busy with fixer-upper tasks getting the 2005 built (but neglected) home slowly into shape.

Here is the space I have to work with - framed in but outlets and drywall still to be installed.  The main space is 15' wide by 27 1/2' long with another 6' section off one end, and another 12x12' area at the far end.  The stairs enter at the far right where the light is.

The SRV Yard project.

With the expansion of the GS&M I was able to gain a lot of extra space.  The problem is the GS&M was built to fit into its 12'x 20' space. At this time what is the PHX end staging is now reached via a Huge Helix down to the bottom staging level for all the shared staging on the layout (PHX - North & TUC - South).

1st cut at a shelf layout design

This is a first cut at a shelf layout plan for the Bellmead TX area shown in Goggle Maps link in previous post.

I would welcome anyones  comments as to plan pitfalls/advanges/changes/etc.

My bottom line is I am forcing myself to quit doodling plans and get something operating before I reach my expiration date! Now we'll see how the upload goes.
