Minimum Curves for Long Freight Cars & Steam Locos
HO scale:
I'm looking at running long cars (autoracks, etc) on 2 parallel mainline curves, (also two helix curves) of OuterRadius 31". What is the minimum curve I can use for the InnerRadius, while still having trains pass one another simultanously on these 2 tracks.
1) In other words what is the minimum distance I need to provide between the centerlines of the 2 tracks?
The Crawford and Cherokee (v2) Build Thread
Over the past few years, I had built a 8 x 18 ft layout inspired by the Iain Rice "Vienna and Carthage" plan which has appeared several times now in books and magazines. Taking the single town approach, I had built the main section of the layout as a town on the Frisco (SLSF). My original variation on the plan appears in the MRH Trackplan Database.
Do I Start Over Now While I Can?
Part of me (thanks to this forum and your awesome layouts) wants to abandon my current layout and instead go for something more like a "shelf layout" I have enough space to do an L shape or P shape so its more looped where one wall is 6ft and the other 20ft.
Current Layout track is laid but not wired yet:
Doodle Time
The walls are all painted, part of my bench work is now in so it is doodle time.
I have tried CAD design for my layouts in the past, but I enjoy doodling ideas.
i have modified that technique by using my template and further modified the process by doodling on plexiglass over top of the scaled drawing.
The plexiglass technique I got from my wife who Doodles on quilts as she designs quilting patterns.
But enough about quilts.
Here are a couple of photos of some doodling.
Sandpiper Bay Terminal, Paper Mill
This blog is a journal, documenting the building of this shelf layout.

New Town Switching Area on the CNW / No name Yet
My latest project is for a new area for switching on the CNW Peninsula Div. This thread will chronicle my progress.
These 3 are the way it looked before the changes.
Northen Pacific Yacolt Branch - Another Revised Plan
Another revision of my upper deck of the Yacolt Branch. Enables continuous run and 3 track staging of logging equipment inside the helix to the bottom deck.
Min radius mainline radius is 24" with no.5 turnouts.
Min radius is the lead after log dump and mill yard.
Y sections is on lift out to alow turning of locomotives when required.
Interested in peoples thoughts and comments on the plan
Detection Section Help (For Signaling)
I am hoping a more experienced person will be willing to look at my track plan. I am setting up detection sections which will be used for signaling in the future. I'm not sure if this is correct/accurate when it comes to the sections near the switches. I wast to be sure before I cut any gaps. I am not sure if I have too many/not enough or if the sections breaks are to close or far away from the switches. I want to limit my detection sections to 32. I am using AnyRail.
Track plan suggestions for Walthers' Modern Warehouse/ Cold Storage Ware House
I recently acquired both the Walthers Modern Warehouse and the Cold storage Warehouse. I'm trying to come up with s track plan to use both of these large (9x20") structures on a siding or sidings that would look reasonable. Does anyone have any good suggestions or or track layout that they may have done already?
IT may have to be on a peninsula, as it would be a shame to hide the non-rail side of the buildings where the truck docks are.
