Layout design
LED Layout Lighting Test Drive
I’ve been running a test of the LED strip lighting from LED Wholesalers. I’ve got a double deck layout under construction. I purchased 1 16-foot strip of the 3100K temp lights and a second 16-foot strip of the 6000K lights. I cut the 16-foot strip in half and mounted the resulting 8-foot strips side-by-side on a 1-3/8 x ¼ strip of hemlock.

Purchasing Strategy : "Stockpiling" VS "J-i-T"?
Dear MRHers,
As I plow thru my current layout-build project, I've necessarily been obtaining various parts and components to "git 'er done". Funnily enough though, I've found that I'm actually purchasing less than I imagined, as a quick look thru the "warehouse" reveals that I already have a significant number of the various required components on-hand.
ATSF Paradigm Division is born
Earlier this year after I finished the second spline helix, I began to re-look the design of my new layout. The new layout would be the replacement for the dismantled ATSF Fillmore Division which had been built in a large room in my house before family members moved back thus requiring the reallocation of the room back to living space. The previous layout was a modified N-scale version of Bruce Chubb's original Sunset Valley RR.
New train room/new layout
Completed new train room, insulated, sheetrocked, heat and AC done, pot lites and ceiling fan installed. Size is 11'2" by 16'6". for HO layout, no doors or other ubstuctions.unfinished concrete floor.
Going to go against the grain on this one....Display Layout...
Flat screen in middle of 11' wall.( think ATSF and NFL )
Plausible, Workable or Just too Much?...
Hi All,
Yesterday while tinkering with the Chemical Transfer Facility on the L&T Branch, and thinking about Ops Sessions and some added extras that could be added to make things a little more interesting I came up with this idea.
The original scene looks like this...
The Hudson Bay Railway slowly comes to life
After years of "planning" or if you prefer procrastinating I have finally got the Hudson Bay Railway/Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Railway underway. Benchwork started on January 1st with the "help" of a 7 and 4 year old. Benchwork has since been completed on the lower level and bus lines, roadbed and track have started to be laid out.
First a little background on the prototype:
Effective Grade
Designing a helix for a new layout. For the life of me I can not find a table that lists the effective slope induced by various radii. In other words, the smaller the radii of a helix, the more friction on the pulling force, thus a 2% slope at a 22" radius actually pulls like a 3.5% slope - or something. I remember using this table before. I believe it is from a J Armstrong book. Any help is welcomed Thanks
Down at the Station
Its been a while since I have been able to post anything. My schedule for the month of September was hectic and so nothing was done on the layout for a while.
Anyway I had to back up and redo some of the joints on my backdrop. I discovered that the tape did not stick to the smooth surface of the hardboard. I ended up removing three joints and sanding the hardboard surface. That little bit of roughness seemed to do the trick. I repainted the backdrop and clouds.
Three Steps Forward.....
....aaaand two steps back.
I should really post more than once a year. But: Real Life. And spare time spent working on the layout instead of blabbing about it.
Anyway, an overview of progress to date:
