Revisions to the south end of Wilmington

Several months ago I floated out some ideas for revising the south end of Wilmington Yard on my layout.  I received some interesting feedback so I thought I would update all y'all on what i ended up doing.

Penn Lake Version 8 (now with track plans)

After spending much time wrestling with some design shortcuts I took 10 years ago, I decided to scrap the current Penn Lake, and start over.  My library of Chuck Yungkurth books inspired me to actually model some of the operations I currently represent with staging.  And finally, my advancing middle, is no longer compatible with some of the choices I made a decade ago.

New layout design- new name, The Greenbrier lumber co.

Well, I made it here. This is all i can think for now. The tunnel is under the log camp I can use the 1.26" for the camp as i only use cars that are lower height. I think the tallest engine i have is the 4-4-0.The interchange is with B&O. This layout will be put on foam.  Am planning for a bigger layout for the future 'IF' we ever stop traveling. Any ideas ?   Smokey

What rolling stock?

I'm currently working on the idea of having a small portable switching layout I can take to hobby shows and something to have fun with while working on my modular layout.

I've seen some plans I like on the net that only have two turnouts, but look interesting to operate.

I want to model a small nail factory circa late 1940s. I'm going to call it Dominion Nail Works. I've already made a private car for this industry.

Is less really more?

Some of you may recall that I demolished my last layout, with the intent of focusing on building models, mainly rolling stock.  While getting rid of the layout albatross did at least free me from the depression of knowing that I wasn't working on it when I "should," I still wasn't happy.  So, I'm thinking of building somrhting smaller, simpler, and more prototypical.

Lance's one turnout industry

Joe, I read your comment on Lance's one turnout industry idea. You can have your cake and eat it, too! Even on TT&TO you can have a local or turn that makes pickups/drops as it "work from C to F". Sure it has to watch out for scheduled trains. What comes to mind with a shout is just a few blocks from your house that I have passed on Amtrak...that little operation looks like a Feed and Seed or grain warehouse. Is that not on the main line from Eugene to Portland? Regards, John Colley, Sonoma, CA (ex Port Townsend, WA)

What do you think of this track plan?

The year is 1974, and the B&O and Penn Central lines parallel each other along the Ohio River for most of the trip between Cincinnati and Aurora, IN.  I'm trying to recreate the operations of this area at that time.

Layout Design pifalls and success

Hello!

I have used one of my last summer holidays to read through some of the free samples of 'Layout Design Journal' - and found the topics very interesting and well written.

No need to compete with this magazine, but this part of our hobby should be used as a interesting basis for a new topic in the MRH Magazine. Anyone agree out there?
