Demise of the Hobby Shops -part deux

http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/17/opinion/greene-showrooming/index.html

Just saw this on CNN yesterday. Seems it's finally not just Hobby Shops that are suffering from on-line merchandising.

Wiring a N scale layout.

What is the right gauge wire to run for you bus and for your accessories.  I dont know if I should go with DC or DCC.

I beleive DC is easier and cheaper.

Bonanza!

Bonanza! - that's what I hit while I was visiting my son this past week.  You see, he is an amateur photographer and recently upgraded his camera gear and said he would sell me his "old" gear at a good price.  Since I'm using a simple fixed lens "point-n-shoot" camera I was anxious to upgrade.

Here's what I got from him

(1) Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D  digital SLR camera body, 6.1 megapixel

(2) Konica Minolta VC-7D vertical battery grip

(1) Konica Minolta 28-80 / 3.5-5.6 lens

Track design computer programs

New to this great hobby. What is a good and easy to understand computer program to design and print out a layout. I'm trying to
Design a layout in N scale.

Programming a Bachmann DCC sound equipped loco

I've got (3) Bachmann DCC sound equipped loco that I would like to change the loco address using my Digitrax Zephyr system. Although I've got an external programming booster connected to the Zephyr I can't seem to change the address using the programming track. Any help will be appreciated!

Why trains?

Why trains? I LOVE trains and have since I was a young child. I was on a train recently (Cresent #19 to Slidell) and thinking - why do I love trains? I came up with a numer of reasons: 1.) They are BIG; 2.) They are HEAVY being made of lots of steel; 3.) When they move they make the ground shake; 4.) They are LOUD - I love the loco Horn, the engine sounds, the rattles, clinks , clacks, pops, and other noises they make; 5.) I love the way the track deflects when the wheels go over it; 6.) I love the smell of a loco under power struggling to pull the train.

Show us your backdrops!

Lately there have been a number of postings in various threads about backdrops, so I thought that I'd start a separate thread to have everyone share theirs in one place.  So if you've got hand painted, printed hybrid, or other style please share some pictures here.  I'll kick it off with some backdrops from my Richlawn Railroad.

One way to pack

Many of you have been following my blog on building Kevin's Grandpa Sam's place at:

http://kevinkreaganhouse.blogspot.com/

The structure is completed and I was faced with the problem of how to package it to safely ship it from North Georgia to Washington state.  The final package weighted 3.88 pounds and looks like it will make it OK.  Please check out the link above for pictures and details on the blog that documents the assembly of the structure and the packaging.

Mountain construction using puffball (and other) trees

This thread is related to the thread entitled "The Great Puff Ball Debate...."  http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/8034 and is in reply to "John from Canada" for his request about the construction of my Misti Mountain area on my railroad.  I didn't want to hijack Conrail079's thread.  Much of this material has been presented before; however it was some time ago and over several threads.
