MRH Website general discussion

Keeping it on track
Maybe if all you linguists out there put as much efforts into your modeling as your "wordsmithing" on this forum, Mr. Howard would not call us lazy modelers and Mr. Fugate would not need to lock the thread! Come on.............lets at least keep it remotely related to model railroading! At least argue about whether it is called a switch or a turnout, a steam engine or a steam locomotive!

Canadian Budd Coaches - Rapido vs Walthers
I was surprised to see an ad for preordering Budd cars made by Walthers for the Canadian Pacific, these cars are to be preordered by Oct. and will be made Dec 2012
Whereas, Rapido is just finishing up their various versions of the Canadian. As the initial units are part of full sets of the Canadian it would see logical for Rapido to sell single cars and FP9's once the Canadian sets are completed.

One to one scale
So what do you do when you are a modeler that can't model because of current circumstances? In my case I try to rail fan anytime that I can to get my "fix". Recently I was in LaGrange, KY as I was visiting my family. I went to LaGrange because the CSX main line runs right down the center of Main Street! When I say middle, I mean middle as the tracks are embedded in the asphalt.

Putt'em on the Ground
When I first got back into this hobby I set Google Alerts for the real railroads like BNSF, CSX, etc. After a couple years of looking at these I have come to a conclusion. Real railroads, in total, have a lot of derailments. It seems there isn't a day goes by that some railroad doesn't have an incident somewhere. I know they have a lot of track and trains in operation. But gee whiz, almost daily incidents. Some of the bigger wrecks cost millions of dollars to clean up. The COOs must consume aspirin by the bucket load.

Pictures of your ballasted track
I am currently laying the ballast. I was not happy with the results and started to pester Woodland Scenics. Then it occurred to me that maybe my results were comparable to that of others. There is a feature to Easy Model Railroad Inventory that allows me to save pictures on my hard drive and another to save links to videos and pictures on the internet.
So I started going through them, looking only at the track and ballast. Looking at mine from the side it looks great, As did almost all the photos and videos. The ballast looked for the most part level, and smooth,

Layout visit
Ok, last try :
In two weeks time now, myself and a group of 5 other Norwegian model railroad enthusiasts are traveling to the US to visit the east coast, and different railroad related sights in and around New York, Washington, Maryland, Pennsylvania etc.
My dream is to be able to visit a couple of nice home layouts during our stay. Are there any layout tours in the period between the 4th and the 12th of October? Or would anyone here like to welcome us into their home for a brief visit?

Help diagnosing ballast problem
Let me start by saying I do not like laying ballast. That being said model trains is my hobby and I am trying to get ready for a layout tour in late Oct.
I have watched videos and read a number of articles describing laying ballast. I am using the method I found here on Model Railroad Hobbyist, I believe written by Charlie Comstock.
