Just found this page that has lots of vintage ads and billboards sorted by decade from the 1800's to the 2000's and by category (yes, there is transportation):

Fun Names for Your Railroad - Railroad Name, Towns, Businesses, etc

Many people are very serious about the names of their railroad, towns, cities, and businesses - I'm not one of them.  If you are strictly protoypical you may have to stick to actual names although many "real" names are humorous.

So here are a few of my favorites that I came up with:

"Hum-Drums" - "We're always trying to drum up business"  (For a manufacturer / distributor of drums & barrels - owner Ima Drum)

Engine Change on the CNY&NE

NYC passenger train #262 is making its early morning station stop at Maywood as a light drizzle is starting to fall.  An express car has been added and the engine change is nearly complete.  Soon, it will start its sprint eastward. What a lucky catch on this dismal cold spring morning!

Enjoy, Jim

How do we add pictures to a post that can be viewed larger by clicking on them?

I noticed that some posts with pictures have the ability to be viewed larger.  When you mouse over the picture a hand appears instead of an arrow.  On the pictures with the hand when you click while the hand is on the picture it enlarges and the hand may turn into a plus (+) sign that if you click again the picture gets even larger.

How is this done during the posting?  It the actual picture a link to another web location?

Dullcote Brush or Spray?

I have been repainting some Box Cars in gloss enamel and applying new decals from Microscale. Plan is now to apply some Testors Dullcote to protect the Decals and remove the shine.  Having never used the product (Dullcote) before, I am seeking opinions on whether it is better to apply it by spray or brush.  I can happily use either technique.  I would also like to know if Nitrocellulose Laquer thinners are suitable to use with Dullcote.

Thanks for your help

Peter

What do you model and why

I think it is interesting to know what someone models and why they chose that railroad, theme, era, etc.

I model the Florida East Coast in 1960 in HO scale.I am going to model the 5th District which was the remnant of the main line to Key West. The area will be around Princeton which even into the early 70s was still very rural. There were produce packing houses, lumber yards and even a small rock quarry in the area. Ballast was limeston and there were grass and weeds around. Train 41/42 switched the area from Miami.

Ritter Lumber Trains on the Apple Valley

My assignment for the April Operating Session on the Apple Valley Model Railroad was the two Ritter Lumber Company trains.

On the layout’s upper level, the Carolina and Northwestern runs from Hickory Yard to Mortimer Interchange. The Ritter Lumber company operates from Mortimer to Spruce Pine and then the two logging camps, Camp 7 and Camp 12.

The normal power is geared steam locomotives, however they were all misbehaving so Southern Railway Alco RS1 #405 filled in.

What are all those buttons for on the post menu?

Is there a section of this website that describes how to use all the tools available to someone posting a message?  I found out how to post pictures by just messing around but there are a number of features that are supported I have no clue how to use.  A detailed "How to post to the MRH website" topic, written, illustrated and kept current by the site owners/support team(?) would be much appreciated.

Should it be the case I simply overlooked something, my apologies (and a request that you point me in the right direction).
