Econami install in new Bowser SD40-2

I know it may be early days for this question to be asked, but here I go anyway.

My 2 Bowser SD40-2s turned up recently and I believe they are excellent models. I have pulled the body off one to see what is beneath and I am most impressed. Wiring and light boards have been well thought out, especially the ditch lights.

I think we can put the old rubbish motors well and truly behind us as well – this one is a monster and pulls/pushes very well. Only test run on DC at this stage.

Spam

I am testing a theory about the spam filter I will post more below

PRR signal practices?

I'd like to add some signals to a segment of my TT layout and need some input from those who know how the Pennsy would have typically signaled the location in the mid 1950's era.   My freelance plan has a mainline running thru the layout with a passing siding,a spur, and a turnout to the branchline.  I'd like to install signals on the mainline and make the branchline dark territory.  The adjacent turnouts to the branchline and the passing siding are about 2 car lengths apart if that matters.

Sand box sand for ballast and scenery

I have some sand box sand I purchased from my local big box store. I bought it for putting on our driveway when ice and snow hit.

It is close to the color of the aggregate hauled out of South Florida by FEC so would be great for my gondolas and hoppers for Naranja Quarry. Also for the ground around there. I model in HO scale.

It could also be used for the limestone ballast FEC used in my period.

Has anyone used this before for ballast? If so how does it work, any problems issues? What about for scenery?

Thank you

Bill Michael

I subscribed almost four weeks ago and have enjoyed both the e-zine and the message board immensley. I do have one problem however. If I'm not careful, I could spend all my hobby time on  this site and not leave any time for modelling!

Best Ho Scale Light Mikado 2-8-2

I want to get a few light Mikados for my layout. I'd like to know your opinions on who makes the most reliable DCC-ready in HO scale.

Paint alternatives to Floquil?

What paint is being used by those that used to use Floquil. I am not artistic and really missed the premixed colors, like grimy black aged concrete even the premixed RR colors.I am not a fan of water based paint, but if the colors were there I woud certainly try them.

Moderator note: We changed the subject to something more meaningful than just the word: paint ...

Got a huge score on eBay!

So I just made a huge score on eBay. Got myself 7 undecorated National Steel Car 60' double plug door box car kits. I don't know if anyone remembers Hubert's Model Railroad Company but they had purchased all the LBF tooling when they went under. Hubert's is no longer around either. The significance of these cars are the fact that they are the only accurate model of the TBOX box car and they are undecorated kits! Three will be painted with TBOX. Two with old logo and one with new logo. The last 4 will be painted for NSC cars built in 2010 for DWC/CN using custom decals from Highball Graphics.
