MRH Website general discussion

Older videos from MRH magazine now gone :-(

I'm fairly new to the site and absolutely love it, your magazine is top notch, I devour each issue, and now have all the back issues, for reading on my portable devices when I have "down time" - One thing I've found is any of the older videos, ie: 2009 Craftsman Structure show report and Scotty Mason clinic, are now gone (dead links - no video) with the demise of blip.tv (August 15, 2015 they shut down), is there any chance these older videos are still saved and could be moved over to another host server? Even TrainmastersTV as I am a subscriber there too!

USRA Freight Car Assignments resource

Years ago I bought a copy of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society’s “Railroad History, No. 128,” Spring 1973 issue, that contains James E. Lane’s historic summary of USRA freight cars. The USRA freight cars have been noted in many hobby articles over the years. Some have featured prototype photos and references to Lane's 1973 article. But these are mostly out of print and often touch on only a portion of the USRA freight cars.

I'm published?

This will appear in tomorrow's Courier Post newspaper. Here is the on line version.

Operating Florida City

Just read Somewhere Southwest post of operations. I thought I would post how I operate my FEC Florida City shelf switching layout.

September bonus downloads

Where are the September bonus downloads? I particularly like Ken Patterson's videos on my large iMac screen, plus this issue was rich in videos. The magazine small videos just do not do it for me. I know the two conventions (NMRA and Narrow Gauge) have slowed things a bit but will these videos come soon?

NARROW GAUGE CONVENTION

I saw where you had pictures and video on Trainmaster TV about the National Convention which was nice, but so far nothing about the Narrow Gauge Convention my question is don't we count? The Convention was at Houston Texas and few days after the National Convention in which NMRA really screwed up seeing that the Narrow Gauge Convention is always the first weekend in September and the National Convention is the first week of August, but why wasn't it in Model Railroad Hobbyist ?

Part here, part there - chasing the electrical system

I think I just ordered the last of the electrical parts for my new module.  Sheesh.

1.  UP5 patch panels - from Yankee Dabbler so they could be built into the module - that was last month.

2.  The club uses trailer connectors, so I had to order them from this place online.  They had wire in 4 strand, so I added that from the same place.

3.  Then off to Home Depot for the terminal blocks.

4.  Next up is the Loconet wiring - had to go back to Yankee Dabbler for a wiring starter kit and connectors for between modules.

It's here

My benchwork guy just called, he is bringing over the first of my new modules!  Some questions I will answer up front - he is an MRH advertiser, I have seen his work, and he lives 10 miles from me (free delivery!) This module is very complicated on the top surface, so complicated that it was worth it to farm it out.

The module will be the subject of a future article, so you can start holding your breath now.

Help modeling a scrap dealer with crane

I’ll be including a scrap / recycling dealer on my layout and would like some input on what others have done to model large piles of metal scrap effectively. See attached photos.

Also, does anyone know if there are good, detailed models of magnetic cranes used in those lots, perhaps even a hydraulic claw that grabs large piles of scrap?

MRH NMRA Portland, OR convention report

PDX 2015 NMRA National Convention logoThis is grand central for MRH to post reports from the NMRA Convention at Portland, OR starting August 24th.

MRH has two clinics Tuesday evening, August 25th. And of course, we have a big booth at the Train Show.
