Operation and maintenance
Operations. Interchanges and transfer runs?
I am starting operations in my small switching layout and I have some questions.
My Csx local train spots and pull cars from a small industry yard, 2 tracks, near a cement plant. This small industry yard has 2 functions, storage and runaround track. A bit later a Csx switcher takes these cars to the cement plant and return with loads and some empties to the industry yard.

This is a short video of a little of the action on Tom Wilson's P&WV and John Wilkes L&N. I was dispatcher so I only caught a little of the action out on the layout but was I ever busy writing track warrants. Hope you enjoy.

Pick-ups/drop-offs inside structures
I got to thinking about spots inside industries and how to tell when we've suitably coupled onto a car - without damaging the car or coupler or knocking the back wall of the industry into the side wall of the adjacent industry. Thinking about something is good. Not coming up with a solution is not so good.....
Help Switchlist Database Design
I need to create a simple relational database to keep track of what cars are in what tracks and in what sequence. I'm having trouble with the tables and relationships to accomplish this task.
An example end result will be a track list which can be marked up to perform switching tasks:
TRACK 1602 - INDUSTRIAL LEAD EAST TO WEST
SEQ CAR_NUMBER CAR_KIND L/E
1 ARMN 715251 REEFER L
2 BNSF 185321 REEFER L
3 ARMN 755285 REEFER L
4 ARMN 755219 REEFER L

I have a few hours to spend in front of the screen...
Look what arrived in the mail today!
Thank you guys for such a great deal...

Anyone Want a (Free) Switch List Generator for Switching Layouts?
Anyone Interested in a Switch List Generator? If you are, I'll "pretty it up" for printing and post it to Google Docs (You're welcome to the Excel version, but I don't take spreadsheets from strangers and neither should you).
It's quick to use and especially useful for those of us who run switching layouts and want both lots of variety but with a purpose when we operate our layouts.
What it looks like:
Anyone using CTs for occupancy detection?
I have installed a dozen blocks using current transducers (CT) to sense presence of an engine (or lighted car) in a block. I use DCC. The circuits were designed by Bill Hudson (see hudsontelcom.com). Some of my signal heads work fine. Some are showing a double indication, ie, the clear signal (green) stays lit. I can't figure out what's causing the problem even with Bill's guidance by emails. All the circuit boards work correctly if I install them in a block where a signal head works properly.
Freight Car Handling and Distribution by Anthony Thompson
This is a great article and it available for free to all. http://www.opsig.org/doff/DOpages/Freight%20Car%20Handling%20new.pdf It's even a pdf so you can save it for latter
Do You Operate With Shelf Couplers? Recommend or not?
I've just learned about shelf couplers on another forum. I was wondering if anyone here uses them on layouts with lots of grades or mountain railroads. Are they too much of a pain to uncouple using skewers in yards, etc.? My grades are 2.7 to 2.9 and a runaway decoupled car goes a long way fast so thought about trying shelf couplers.
I'd appreciate hearing any Operations Session experiences you might be able to relate using them.
Thanks.

Observations on Soldered Connections
Today I performed some maintenance on the layout to deal with seasonal expansion and contraction. With all the discussion that occurs on soldering rail joints and feeders, I thought I'd share what needed fixing...
