Operation and maintenance

Through Train Ops

I'm wondering what is the best way to handle through trains - trains that run from staging at one end of the layout to staging at the other end of the layout with little or no change in consist.

Specifically. Do all cars in the train get a car card/waybill, or just the ones that are scheduled to either start or end their run on the visible portion of the layout?

Thanx in  advance for all info and suggestions.

George

What do you use to generate Car Cards and WayBills

Good Day Everyone,

What computer programs are available for generating car cards and waybills? I have been using a realtime switchlist program and after a year now it is time to move to CC and WB. I am doing this so that I have more flexibility with my train operations and I as the "owner" of the layout can be present when trains are being operated. The current program requires me to be at the computer the entire time.

Thanks in advance to everyone that responds!

Cheers,

Colin

Fine tuning couplers. How do I cure inadvertent uncoupling?

I use  EZMate under track magnetic uncouplers. If the couplers themselves are correct height and move freely I usually have no problems with functional uncoupling. Sometimes cars will inadvertently uncouple when passing over the coupler. Does anyone have suggestions for fixing this. I have found bending the coupler pin up a bit and thus reducing the attraction of the magnet somewhat occasionally helps. Perhaps removing the metal back plate from the magnet would be useful.

Power to tonnage forumla

Ok guys question:

When setting up a train do any of you use a formula for # of locos for X amount of weight

ie 1000 hp required for every 750 tons etc

obviously steep grades and other whatnot would add a degree of difficulty into this but im looking for a general good rule of thumb

Revisit water cars?

Hi, Joe, going through some of our old (2004) communications and I noticed that for all eastbound (north) trains the water car operations were at Oakland. Somehow I missed when they were moved to Roseburg. Curious as to when and why? John Colley, Port Townsend, WA Day Late and Dollar Short Line

Would it be "too much" to have Crews on the mainline Carry a phone reciever with them?

I am going through tremendous planning, design, and expense to hold as much fidelity as practical and possible to modeling as things were in 1953.  One thing the Conductor had available to them in an emergency to contact the Dispatcher (for situatoins like a derailment, breakdown, etc) and inform them of the situation if they were not near a station phone was a phone receiver that literally would be attached by a couple of electrical clips to the party line to the Dispatcher's Office. This receiver would be kept in the caboose.  So my question is, how ridiculous am I bel

Sequential Trains Ops: Need a "walk through" please?

I've often read that starting ops on one's freshly contructed layout can be made easy using sequential train schedules before moving on to car cards, to and tt, etc.

Does sequential running still allow all the fun strategies of several trains meeting up at an industry, yard, etc.and having to figure out how to stay/get out of each other's way?  Or is each train's run completed before the next train begins it's sequence?

I could use a "walk through" of this system, or two, please. Thank you.

What do you use for radio communications?

Good Day Everyone,

I have now been hosting operating sessions on my layout for almost a year and so far it is going quite well. The one thing that would be nice is to have radio communication versus just "yelling" out orders/requests. So my question is, what system do you use for radio communications?

Thanks in advance to everyone that responds!

Cheers,

Colin

Rolling stock in need of repair

Hello, I had just purchased an Athearn 56' well car. When I got home, I noticed the one end was leaning towards a side. I disassembled the truck/coupler box and noticed the screw holding the truck didn't go in straight, causing the truck to shift, thus giving the car it's "lean". Anyway I was thinking about retapping the hole so the screw goes in straight. So my question is does anybody know what size of screw does Athearn uses to secure the trucks to the body? Thanks in advance for your help.

Atlas Gold Series DCC programming problems

Recently my brother purchased an Atlas Gold Series Diesel loco which comes factory-installed with DCC and sound. After changing some of the sound CVs, we found that the loco would not respond when applying the throttle. Sounds worked fine, but no locomotion. In DC mode, locomotion was fine. Resetting to factory defaults did not help.
