Operation and maintenance

Helper ops question

Say a stretch of railroad in a mountainous area was owned by railroad A, but railroad B had trackage rights.

That stretch of railroad is also a helper district, where railroad A's trains stop at the base of the grade to have extra locomotives added for the trip up the grade, and removed after the trip down the grade.

What happens to railroad B's trains?

1. Do railroad A's helper locos get added to railroad B's trains?

2. Does railroad B also have its own helper locos stationed at the base of the grade?

Operations

Hello everyone!  I was just curious if anyone wanted to share how they operate there layouts.  My HO scale NF&D Layout has been operational for the last several years and it focuses on industrial switching.  I have tried everything from CC and WB, switch list and just making it up as I go along. I have had success in all 3 and I have found a method that I like but I figured I would start a friendly topic and maybe learn something new from some of

Backflip in motion!

Last night I decided I wanted to do a little switching in my alcove area and I had written up a chart about the moves to use as a guide.  I accomplished the switching and has a good time doing it.  After finishing the switching I decided to run a train around my layout with the track cleaning car since it's been over a week since running trains.  The train was headed up by my new Atlas Gold U23b loco which is a beauty.

The Economics of Operating Sessions

I had a relative and her husband visit for Thanksgiving.  He knows little about trains but was willing to try running a train to do some switching.  He was impressed with how complicated it could be - far more challenging than it looked.

older kadee trucks

i have some older kadee trucks that don't roll as well as the new ones, in fact, using the old ones vs the new trucks there is a 10 to 12 car difference on the same grade. any suggestions on improving them? oil vs graphite, which oil etc.  second question are there any standards for  free rolling ?

Anyone here use MOPS?

Not sure if this belongs here or not but does anyone use the Model Operations Processing System software??

I have it downloaded and installed but the website www.railmops.net seems to have gone bye bye and I was wondering if anyone had either a contact and/or a current place on the web where one can get some questions answered...

Thanks in advance

Sean

Masonite track cleaners - an old idea that WORKS!

Many of you know about this and use this type of car already.  This is a reminder for those that haven't tried it, and for the new modelers who may not have heard of or seen such a thing yet.

To Signal or not...that is the question

I am in the process of my new layout.  I am done my layout drawing, but the question I am left with, is should I install Signals or not.  I model HO and my layout is a freelance modern (today) concept.  I had though about putting them in and going with the idea that they were used by the railroad before my railway took over, and they just decided not to use them.  the other concept is to have running CTC on the layout or using the signals as ABS.  I am just not sure what route to go.  Any suggestions would be welcome.

Mini-RU11 Auto Reversing Unit

Hi!  I am setting up a trolley line for a Christmas holiday town display using "N" gauge.  I have the track, transformer, bumpers and trolleys.  I just purchased this auto-reversing unit, but the instructions are not quite clear enough.  Any additional ideas as to how to set up the light sensitive posts for the unit?  Any help would be very welcomed!  Thanks!

Operations / Switching question

DISCLAIMER:

I am "Operations Ignorant" in that I've never done operations so please respond using terms / language that would be "Operations for Dummies"; and yes, I have purchased the excellent "Ops Sessions Live" DVDs and watched them.
