Bachmann Skarloey DCC w/sound conversion + kit-bash

Hi all, first time post here.

I entered the hobby about 2 months ago, due to a love of modeling. I started with scratch building some structures and masonry with foam, strip wood and aluminum.

I spent this past weekend converting a Bachmann Skarloey to DCC with sound. It's an inexpensive engine that is easy to take apart and I was drawn to HOn30 because I like N scale track but would rather model in HO for details.

N Scale loco for super tight turns

I'm thinking about building a small N Scale pizza layout with Kato 117mm track. I just want to make a circle so it will fir on a 1x1' piece of wood. Any ideas about what locos would run. I'd love to find a small steam engine but the only loco I can find are the trams that Kato sells. I really don't want to model a city scene so I'm looking at other options

Thanks-Tim

Pullman Fluting (HO) question

Hi all,

I was wondering if the fluting on the styrene fluted sides (Pullman fluting) by Palace Car co and the ones by Union Station products do match the fluting seen on the Walthers Proto cars (ATSF).

I am looking at my options on some projects and i cannot discern the details from the photos i find online, so i was wondering if anyone has used the aforementioned products and compared them side by side with the Walthers cars.

MKT Heavyweight Passenger Car Numbers

Good evening, all.

I'm looking for information on MKT's roster numbering for their heavyweight cars. Specifically, their number series of 12-1 sleeping cars. I've checked between the three reference books I own and searched online, to no avail. Is there anyone here that might be able to shed some light on their roster numbering system?

Thank you in advance!

Alco D-150 UP 3-unit Gas Turbine

I have a brass Alco D-150 3-unit Gas Turbine. Lead and middle units are powered, with the original motors. I am looking at repowering these units and am looking for suggestions on repowering kits. Thank you.

How do you improve electrical pickup in locos with contacts embedded in the sideframe (BLI, Genesis, Kato, etc)?

While testing a decoder install in a Broadway Limited SW1500, it would occasionally stall for no apparent reason. To get it going again, all I would need to do is push one of the axles all the way to one side.

sound vs no sound

After converting to DCC not too long ago I might add, the options seem endless as to what you can now do to create a realistic operating railroad, signals, lighting, cross bucks, bells, camp fires, head lights on automobiles, street lights, clickity clack, break squeals, rail crickets, and real crickets, barn animals, babbling brooks and streams, and of course diesel or steam locomotive sounds. Id like to get some input on how folks truly feel about sound overall before I start dropping some coin on it.

All wheel pick up challenge

I turned over the loco I intend to make all wheel pick up, and to my dismay, found all this detail that will definitely make it a major challenge.

smooth rolling trucks

Occasionally I splurge and spend what I call high end prices on rolling stock- $35 to $50 a car, however I mostly stay within the $25 to $35 range when purchasing rolling stock due to budget etc., Now I know the old saying is you get what you pay for, I have purchased Walther's "mainline" 50ft box cars $24,  on a scale of 1 to 10 in roll ability I give them a 3 or 4 at best, on a slight grade and a small nudge they stop within the grade, that's great if my spur is on a grade but not so great when creating drag during operating.
