Digitrax SDXH186 Decoder

Anyone have experience with this decoder the 8 bit or X 16 bit?

I'd like to hear your pros and cons debating between ESU Loksound already comes with the correct sounds loaded or this cheaper decoder which i will have to get the correct sounds files on it for a GE U25B.

Refrigerated Containers ???

Okay, gang.

I know that modern 53' perishable containers have their own self contained reefer and fuel tank, but what about the 20' and 40' ocean going containers? Are these no longer used or how do they get power while being transported via rail?

need pics of innards

ok gang i need some help.  I just bought a couple engines on facebook and need help identifing one of them.

It is an sd-9 loco in prr paint scheme.  I know it has sound because it works fine however it will not move.  When I opened it up there was a board I was not familiar with and 3 lights on the inside.  2 amber lights for the headlights and one yellow one kinda in the cab area.  The board has a bunch of plugs in it for vairous wire groupings, and has a big capacitor also incorporated in it.

Is this a 21 Pin Decoder? Bowser GE U25B

I took the shell off my Bowser U25B that came DCC Ready. Not sure where to look for the pins. Did I keep the box or instructions when I bought it over a year ago? NOPE! Little ole me was like "Instructions are on the internet" and "I will never go DCC" I am pretty sure all Bowser Executive Locos are 21, im pretty sure this is Executive before I tossed the box...

Opinions on F unit cut levers & airhorns

Hi all,

I am looking at some detail parts for some F units i need to work on (HO scale). Since i have not seen the parts in person and i only got access to what i see from webshops/listings, i would very much appreciate your feedback and suggestions on casting quality / thickness etc... if you have worked with them or saw them in person.

Need Help with well car missing/Broken parts

If anyone has an exploded-view parts diagram of these well cars, I'd appreciate it if they could scan it and send me a copy. Not sure if they Athern or Atlas. Picked up three sets at a recent train show and didn't notice they have a few missing or broken parts such as the ladders. Not very bright of me, but I did get them at rellay good prices.

single well carAyone having a parts list can email them  to me privately.

Atlas master to trainman compatibility

I have a quick question. Does anyone know if the Atlas Trainman GP38-2 Shell is a drop in fit for the Atlas Master series GP38 chassis with sound?

Thanks,
Shane

Tight Curves Experienced by Owners of Rivarossi Allegheny's ?

Looking for feedback from owners of Rivarossi Allegheny steam locos.

What are the minimum radius curves you have been able to operate on without derailments?

I recently posted some photos of static situations here,..

Replacement pilot truck for Athearn 2-8-2

So,

My club received a donated Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 Mikado that had a split gear. No problem, we have a wheel puller and a quarterer was worth buying.

Alas, before I could order the gear, another club member dropped the engine. For the most part the engine received little damage, BUT the pilot truck brok apart with pieces missing.

Naturally this locomotive is quite old and Athearn no longer has parts for it.

Primer paint for brass - rattle can or other?

What are good primer paints for brass?  Whate have you used?

I am nervous about spray cans because they often cover too thickly and it is more difficult to direct into small areas.

I have researched and found:

  • Some suggest self-etch primer from a rattle can (Rustoleum Self-Etching Primer).
  • Some clean then mildly etch the brass in vinegar and prime with whatever model paint you prefer.
