Locos and rolling stock

Ideal loco horn placement - railroaders opinions wanted

I'm kit bashing a GP35M while not modeling a specific prototype unit.  When finished, I'll install a Loksound Select decoder with a 16 cylinder 645C prime mover.

I'm trying to decide on horn placement - top of the cab or out on the long hood.  What do the real-world railroaders prefer?

Kato SD40 numberboards

I have a Kato SD40, new in box, that has been hiding in the closet since 2003. It is an undecorated model and, unfortunately, came without numberboard inserts. Kato USA does not have any in stock. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Not all couplers are created equal

Hi all,

switching from a mega N scale situation to a smaller HO operation.

My plan is for the "less is more" approach this time, and I want to detail my equipment.

In N scale my choice of couplers was rather limited and after quickly amassing a giant collection I knew I wasnt going to update everything. Now that I made the swtich to HO I want to detail my cars and also maximise performance.

Decoders for a Newb

So I am going from DC to DCC. I am looking for clarification:

  • $30 decoders dont do sound?
  • you can buy speakers and add to the above decoder to get sound?
  • You have to buy a $100 decoder that has a speaker attached?

A little about my HO scale locos:

  • Bowser DCC Ready GE U25B
  • Proto 200 DC Alco S9

I plan on buying the Digitrax Zephyr with LNWI to use my smartphone as a throllte if that helps answer the questions

Modifying a chassis

I am kitbashing a Union Railroad "Buffalo" locomotive and, like the real life hyprid, the locomotive needs a long front EMD hood sitting on a Baldwin DRS 6-6-1500 Chassis.  The Bowser model of the latter will give me the chassis and trucks, etc.

Locomotives for the 1890's

I'm building a 1890's logging layout and I'm looking for suggestions. Right now my livery is:

3 MDC 2-6-0's (old-time)

1-Bachman Porter 0-6-0 Side Tank (headlight and compressor backdated)

MDC Climax (The boxy one)

Spectrum 3-truck Shay

Riverossi Heisler

What I need is at least one more road engine.

The layout is freelance, set along a ficticous mainline between San Francisco and Eureka CA owned by SP.

The front on BN SD7's

Just bought a Atlas BN SD7.  Did they operate them short hood or long hood forward? I know Great Northern SD7's were operated long hood forward.

Visual differnce between K and AB brakes

When a car rolls by on an HO scale layout, how much visual difference is there between the various sorts of airbrakes?  I tend to notice the presence of a brake system, but don't know the details.  For now, anyway, if a car will have visible brakes due to its design, and doesn't include them, I'm happy to put Accurail brakes in there.  http://accurail.com/accurail/Direct/Underframe/180.JPG

Kadee semi-scale couplers vs. Sergents

This is a follow-up to a Weekly Photo Fun thread discussion that started at http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/32447?page=2#comment-322977 and continued on concerning the merits of Sergent couplers vs. Kadee semi-scale.  Since we were straying from the intent of that thread, I thought I'd start a new topic. See first reply below.
