Locos and rolling stock

What does this lettering say on a covered hopper?

I am interested in making the covered hopper in the following photo. Does anyone know what the lettering circled in red says?

Why gear the middle driver of steam locos?

All steam locos seem to have the drive gear on the axle closest to the middle. I am re-motoring all my steam.

Often there is no backhead because the old open-frame motor took up to much space.

It would be easier install a backhead on smaller engines if the motor was further forward, the drive gear on a front driver.

Modern freight cars on the Mopac's Bagnell Branch (modern as in 1980) . More boxcars added today.

Just for fun I decided to operate the Bagnell branch circa 1980  as if it hadn't been abandoned.  This lets me and some other former Mopac employees enjoy our former employer.  Here's a couple of modern freight cars I recently added to the roster.

HOn3 Precision Scale Shay

Long long ago I got a KTM HOn3 class A shay from Precision Scale as a Christmas or a birthday gift from my wife. I ran it off and on for about 2 months until the white durlin ? gear cracked. It has sat in it's box or on a display shelf for close to 30 years now. Other than the gear it seems to be in pretty good shape.

At this point I have no idea if I will sell this or not, but I would really like to know if it can be fixed. Tried a google search on this and came up empty except for one on eBay for $500. Claimed it was a rare loco. Don't know if it is or not.

Locomotive maintenance schedule

Who has a spreadsheet, written schedule or material they are willing to share to set up a maintenance schedule for brass locomotives and diesel RTR's (Proto, Atlas mostly)? Units have been in storage for sometime, so I need to start with basics and then come back to do followups on a regular rotation.

Any and all comments, et cetera are appreciated in advance.

How wide are the walkways on diesel locomotives?

I'm looking to freelance a narrow gauge diesel, and don't know what range of widths the walkways along the sides of the locomotive would be.  Since I'm looking to build a freelanced main line (Or Maine line) modern road engine in either HOn30 or On30, I need to find that little bit of info.  Loco may be a 4 or 6 axle diesel, or might even be a B+B-B+B, depending on what I find for donor units

Atlas Alco HH660 sound decoder recommendation

I have an Atlas Alco HH660 DC loco that I'm going to install sound in. This diesel had the 539 non turbo engine.

What decoder/speaker would you recommend?  I've seen several discussions on QSI & Tsunamis with the 539 sounds but would like to hear your comments, suggestions & pitfalls before I purchase any decoder.

Thanks

New BLI Y6b paragon3 wont run in reverse

Just unboxed this mammoth loco today and immediately a problem.   Looks great and works perfectly in Foward and neutral.

When i put it in REVERSE, it goes haywire.  Does not move.  Starting at speed step one, all engine sounds stop and i hear a distorted sound, sounds like a short, repeats in a loop while engine does not move.  Switching back to forward, it works fine.  Reverse, and just distortion.  Same on DCC as DC.

Intermountain SD40-2 issue

I have a DC model railroad (using MRC 9950 power packs) which I have been constructing over the last 6 months.  Today I encountered an interesting issue with a pair of Intermountain SD40-2s that I purchased last year.  Up until a month ago I was using an old MRC 501 and an MRC 2400 (from the 1970s and 1980s) to power the two tracks (it's a double-track mainline).  The pair of SD40-2s (no sound) ran just fine with both of those power packs, although the throttle setting response of the locomotives was different for the two power packs.

Need help identifying an HOn3 locomotive

Hi all!
I need help identifying this HOn3 model:

I got it as is with a broken gearbox which is now being replaced with a new from NWSL.
What prototype does it have? And who made the model?
I'm going to repaint and decal it, so it would be nice to get it right.... :)
