Cinder Conveyor Identification
Hi everyone,
I have a mystery on my hands. Can anyone identify the cinder conveyors seen here in Willmar, MN on the Great Northern Railway? They were both installed in the mid 1940s to replace manual pits and were retired not much later.
Thanks!
Flying drop runaround
While looking into the NYS&W’s Utica area operation I came across this video from 1991 showing a flying switch maneauver to do a runaround, with only a single guy on the ground. The setup for the flying switch starts at 5:10, the train is just coming back from working an industry in New Hartford, and sitting on the other track are a couple cars they had previously pulled from the New York Mills industrial track that comes off the straight leg of that switch. I don’t know what if any grade is on that track.

Santa Fe Denver Connection: More Info?
I am a big-time Santa Fe fan (*everyone else looks confused, reads my username a second time and gives me a funny look*) and I heard that Walthers is releasing a new version of the Santa Fe Super Chief (i.e.

Need help to justify Trackage Rights over Erie RR - WAS:Looking for examples of RR Tunnel cave in's
I am looking for examples of how railroads dealt with Tunnel Cave in's during the 1950s, to answer a number of questions.
First question is, how long did it take to repair/rebuild the tunnel (or day-lighting it if that was practical, as was done on the Santa Fe RR, IIRC)
Second, in the 1950s, if it was a mainline for the railroad, and was the only line available, how did the railroad seek out alternate routes on other Railroads? Would trackage rights on another RR's tracks be an option?

Need help reconciling Map with PRR Timetable...
As was noted in another thread it's "about 80 miles from Franklin to Pittsburgh. " Which when I go onto GoogleEarth that is what it measures out, roughly following the Allegheny River. Maybe 90 miles, but according to the PRR Timetable, it states it's 123.7 miles. Can anyone please help reconcile this.
Thanks.

What sorts of motive power would short-line (class 3) railroads be buying from the mid 40's to mid 50's and from where?
I am thinking of modeling a Class 3 railroad during the mid 40's-mid 50's, and I was wondering where they would get their motive power. The railroad is set in Colorado (with a potential partner-railroad extending the network down to Arizona via trackage rights) and I was wondering where it would get it's equipment. I know that later Class 3 railroads got their locomotives almost exclusively second-hand, but I want to model steam AND first generation diesel on this short-line railroad, and since the earliest first generation diesels (excluding early yard switchers of
Norfolk Southern Caboose Question
I saw a picture of an NS grey bay window caboose with a red N and a Black S with safety stripes on the ends of the caboose. Does anyone know what era they were used and why the grey paint scheme? Thanks!
History Trails
I love history. History and Mechanical Engineering were my double majors in college. I was reading a book about covered hoppers and how thay have changed during their lives and I came across the mention and short history of Southern's " Big John " hoppers. Like any great internet search/trail of breadcrumbs that somehow leads you to looking at the set of slicin' n dicin' Ginsu knives, I soon was reading about how Southern's marketing plan got the ICC involved and then how that court case radically changed some facets of railroading in America.

Caboose Assignments - when did procedures change for most railroads?
For most railroads, when did Conductors/Crews no longer were assigned their own Caboose and were organized in a "pool" service?
Thanks.

Are Milk Cars switched in Freight Yards or in Passenger Yards?
I do not have much information on Milk Car Operations. I had a book from the NEB&W but I have misplaced it for the moment. I'm working on the design for the Northern Terminus of my railroad and I realized one question I have never had figured out the answer for is where do the Milk Cars go to be switched? As I understand normal operations, they are handled by Local Passenger/Mail/Express Trains. The Mail Cars go to the RPO facility, REA handles the Express Freight Cars, but what about the Milk Cars?
thanks all.
