I saw a picture of an NS grey bay window caboose with a red N and a Black S with safety stripes on the ends of the caboose. Does anyone know what era they were used  and why the grey paint scheme?  Thanks!

The Original Norfolk Southern

It sounds like you saw a caboose from the original Norfolk Southern, a railroad located in eastern Virginia and North Carolina.  The original NS was bought by the Southern Ry prior to the merger with the N&W. I don't know the full history.  But the grey caboose scheme existed in the early 1970s.

Rebuilt from boxcars circa 1969.  Earlier versions were bright red.

Probably gone by the time today's Norfolk Southern was formed.

The Southern bought the original NS in 1973 or 74.  The surviving pieces make up part of today's Aberdeen Carolina & Western.

That is exactly the one in the picture I looked at. I could not find any information on it and wondered if it would fit the era we model which it doesn't. Thank you very much for the info.

Caboose

Search for eastcoastrailroads.com they have a book on the history of the original Norfolk Southern cabooses, along with some special run models.
